Man, 29, Docked For Swindling Woman Of N5m Under False Pretence

A 29-year old man, Alamba Godwin Chibuzor, has been arrested and charged in Lagos State for allegedly swindling a woman, Ogochukwu Oye, under the false pretence of doing grilling business for her but it turned out to be a scam.

 

P.M.EXPRESS reports that the incident happened on 5th January, 2025, in Ikeja area of Lagos.

 

According to the Police, the suspect asked the complainant to bring the money for the grilling business and he will be bringing returns to her.

 

However, after he collected the money,  he bolted away and did not make any returns to the complainant.

 

The matter was reported to the Police at Alausa Division. The suspect was arrested and detained at the station for interrogation over his alleged conduct.

 

During interrogation, he admitted to have collected the money but had spent it and had no money to refund the complainant.

 

The Police found him culpable and consequently charged him before the Ogba Magistrate Court for the alleged offence which attracts several years of imprisonment.

 

The charges read:

“That you, Alamba Godwin Chibuzor, M, on 5th day of January, 2025 about 1520hrs, in the Ikeja Magisterial District, did unlawfully obtain the sum of N5,000,000.00 (Five Million Naira) from one Ogochukwu Oye ‘F under the pretence of doing grilling business for her and thereb committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 314 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria 2015.”

 

COUNT II:”That you, Alamba Godwin Chibuzor ‘M’ on same date, time anc place in the aforesaid Magisterial District, did steal the sum of N5,000,000.00 (Five Million Naira) property of Ogochukwu Oye ‘F and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria 2015.”

 

However, he pleaded not guilty.

 

The prosecutor, Supol Phillip Ademigbuji, then asked the Court to give a date for hearing since he pleaded not guilty to enable the Police to prove that he actually committed the alleged offence.

 

The Presiding Magistrate, Mrs. O. Kusanu, granted him bail with two sureties, who must show evidence of means of livelihood and tax payment while addresses will be verified by the Court.

 

The matter was adjourned for mention while the defendant was remanded in custody at the correctional center at Kirikiri town, Lagos, pending when he will perfect his bail conditions.
