A 33-year old man, Seun Sowemimo, has been sentenced for 12 months imprisonment without an option of fine for scaling the fence and attempting to steal from ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo’s compound in Ogun State.
P.M.EXPRESS reports that this was the judgment of the Abeokuta Magistrates Court, Ogun State, which found Sowemimo guilty before the Court for the alleged offence.
The now convict, Sowemimo, whose address was not known, was caught at night when he climbed Chief Olusegun Obasanjo’s fence in order to steal but was caught by the security guard on duty.
During interrogation, he reportedly told the security guard that he was there to steal and that was why he climbed the fence. He was handed over to the Police for prosecution.
When he was arraigned, he pleaded guilty to the two-count charge of theft and causing a breach of the peace.
The Presiding Magistrate, Mrs. Olajumoke Somefun, said that the prosecution proved the matter beyond reasonable doubt and found him guilty as charged.
Meanwhile, the prosecutor, Supol Olakunle Shonibare, had earlier told the Court that Sowemimo scaled the fence into the compound of ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo in Abeokuta on 1st April, 2022, with intent to steal.
He explained that immediately he jumped in, he was caught by one of the security guards on duty and handed him over to the Police and from there he was charged to Court.
The offence, he said, contravened the Criminal Code Laws of Ogun 2006 and asked the Court to sentence him accordingly since he had pleaded guilty to serve as deterrent to any other person who might try such in future.
