A 47-year old man, Moruff Mudashiru, has been arrested and charged before the Court in Lagos for allegedly using a bamboo stick to tap electricity directly from the high tension cables.
P.M.EXPRESS reports that the incident happened at David Ladinjo Street, Akinogun area of Lagos, where they reside.
He was arrested by Police operatives from the Gowon Estate Division, and then charged for conspiring and stealing.
The Police alleged that on 23rd May, 2023, Moruff conspired with others now at large, used the bamboo stick to connect electricity to their compound and was having direct light from the high tension cables.
However, information leaked to the officials of the electricity company, who went to the Police and reported the alleged electricity theft. Hence, the Police arrested Moruff and detained him at the station for interrogation over his alleged conduct.
During interrogation, he was said to have admitted to have done so for them to be having constant light because the wires connected to their street was not getting light in the area.
He explained to the Police that despite the fact that they were paying electricity bills, they were not having constant power supply. He stated that since they connected the wire directly to the high tension cables, they were having constant light and will still pay the electricity company their estimated bills.
However, the Police found him culpable and subsequently charged him before the Court for the alleged offence.
He pleaded not guilty when he was arraigned.
The prosecutor, Supol Benson Emerhi, asked the Court to give a date for hearing since he pleaded not guilty to enable the Police to prove that he actually committed the alleged offence.
The Presiding Magistrate, Mr. L.A. Owolabi, granted him bail with sureties, who must show evidence of means of livelihood and addresses verified by the Court.
The matter was adjourned while the defendant was remanded in custody at the Correctional Centre at Kirikiri town, Lagos, pending when he will perfect his bail conditions.
