A 48-year old man, Oseni Sulaiman, has landed in trouble in Lagos State for standing as surety for a lady, Taiwo Adegboye, over N15m fraud as she bolted away and sent a message to him to go and pay the money to the Police.
P.M.EXPRESS reports that the incident happened at Meiran Police Division of the Lagos State Command, where Sulaiman went to bail Taiwo and promised to bring her whenever the Police needed her.
However, after Taiwo was granted bail, she secretly ran away to an undisclosed location having realised that the evidence before the Police was weighty and if she is tried in Court, she will be jailed.
Trouble started when the Police asked Sulaiman to produce Taiwo at the station and he tried to contact her to no avail. By then, all the available contacts he had with her were disconnected. When he eventually contacted her, she asked him to go and pay the money to the Police or he should be prepared to go to jail on her behalf.
Sulaimon then went to the Police and informed them that Taiwo has been on the run since she was released from the station. He was asked to bring the N15m as he signed as surety before she was released to him but he said he had no such money.
He was subsequently arrested and charged before the Ogba Magistrates Court for perverting of justice by aiding Taiwo’s escape from the long arms of the Law.
He pleaded not guilty when he was arraigned.
The prosecutor,  Mr. Adejumola Olasunkanmi, then asked the Court to give a date for hearing since he pleaded not guilty to enable the Police to prove that he actually committed the alleged offence.
The Presiding Magistrates, Mrs. O. E. Israel, granted him bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum.
He was remanded in the Correctional Centre at Kirikiri town, Lagos, pending when he will perfect his bail conditions while the matter was adjourned till 26th August, 2022, for mention.
