A refuse dump in Lagos

For residents of Oboye Street, Ejigbo, Lagos, it was a shocking and sad experience for them as they woke up early Tuesday morning to discover the corpse of a new born baby among the heap of refuse in the dumpsite on the street.

According to some residents, they suspected the baby was brought alive and dumped there in the middle of the night by the mother.

One of the residents told our correspondent that late on Monday night while he was passing along the street, he heard a chilling cry of a baby and he told some of his neighbours. But they could not do anything because of fear and it was already late to go into the dumpsite until the morning. On combing the dumpsite in the morning, their fears were confirmed as the baby was already dead by then.

According to one of the residents, “the baby had cried all through the night, became weak and died”.
However, some residents rained curses on whosoever the person that treated the baby in such crude manner. They lamented why any mother who may not wanted the baby could not have taken the baby to the Motherless babies’ home.

The matter was, however, reported to the police who later organised the health workers who came and took the baby’s corpse away for burial.
The Police have since commenced investigation to unravel the mother or any person who might have committed dastard act to the innocent baby.
