OBIDI: I Want To Be Among The Best In Music Industry
When he dropped his first single titled ‘Love Bonanza’ in 2020 during the worldwide lockdown occasioned by Covid-19 pandemic, it took the music industry by storm. Other songs such as ‘Ova You’, ‘Don’t Hesitate’, ‘Finish Me’ and ‘Hold You Down’ followed in succession. That was when, Otubelu Obidi Stanley simply known as Obidi announced his entrance into the scene.
His latest cover of the hit song, ‘Ogechi’ by Boypee, Brown Joel and Hyce has further confirmed his artistic prowess.
“I decided to do a cover of ‘Ogechi’ because it is one of the biggest songs at the moment, and I was surprised with the kind of attention it has generated on the Social Media space since I posted it,” Obidi said in an interview recently at an event in Lagos.
The young artiste took ‘Ogechi’ to another height in the less than a minute cover like what Davido did to the same song in the ‘Ogechi’ remix.
He has since caught the attention of a big artiste cum record label owner who has initiated a move to bring him into his music family that boasts of top young stars at the moment.
“Because talks are ongoing, it will be unwise at this point to drop his(record label owner) name, but just to confirm the news, yes, we are currently in the middle of negotiations. He loved my ‘Love Bonanza’ and other of my works, so if eventually we get down to working together, some new touches would be added to some of my works and then we would be good to go. Am I excited? Yes, I am because it would be the biggest break I have been looking for if this works out for good.”
He has a special sentimental attachment to ‘Love Bonanza’ especially when it was played back to back at an edition of Big Brother Naija reality television show.
“Well, I was excited, I was thrilled because the housemates were truly enjoying the song. I thank the organisers of the show and the DJ too for that, because that is the kind of visibility any artiste, especially upcoming ones needed.”
His dream is to become one of the biggest music stars in Nigeria.
“That is the dream of any artiste, to be among the best, to be in the top league of stars. In fact, that is the dream of anybody in any endeavour be it in the corporate world, sports or music, so, yes, that is the end game, the target; to be the best or among the best in your field.”
Obidi said a formal announcement would be made if the ongoing deal negotiations come to fruition.
“The media would be the first to know if anything comes out of what is currently going on. My manager is on top of things and I trust his judgment. One can only hope for the best in all situations, so I am hoping for the best in this situation.”
