Smiles, laughter, and a sense of relief filled the air in Agbado, Ogun State, as over 600 pupils across government schools received essential back-to-school supplies under the Project Equip by OPay initiative, a partnership between REEL Foundation and OPay.

The community-focused program, themed “Empowering Education and Learning for Pupils in Ifo LGA”, was designed to improve access to education and foster development in underserved communities.

The project, held at St. Peter’s African Church Primary School, Agbado, on Thursday 18, September, 2025 was attended by community leaders, teachers, parents, and stakeholders within the education sector. Pupils received comprehensive school packs including branded school bags, sandals, notebooks, socks, and a full stationery set comprising pens, pencils, erasers, and more.

Speaking at the event, Ajoke Adeola, Founder of REEL Foundation, highlighted the significance of the initiative:

“Education is one of the greatest equalizers, but for many children in underserved communities, something as simple as having a school bag, a pair of sandals, or writing materials can determine whether they thrive or fall behind. The Agbado community reflects the realities of many underserved communities across Nigeria, where children are eager to learn but lack the basic tools. Project Equip is an avenue to level the playing field and give these young learners a fair chance at success.”

The atmosphere at the distribution event was filled with excitement and relief, as pupils proudly carried their new school bags and parents expressed gratitude for the much-needed support.

The initiative was warmly welcomed by the local community, with teachers and parents describing it as timely support for families preparing their children for the new school year.

Some parents and beneficiaries at the event described the intervention as “timely” as the event was held just as schools were resuming from the long vacation.

Mrs Simoyan and Mrs Awolowo, Headmistresses of the host schools, St. Peter’s African Church Primary School 1 and 2, Oke Aro called the donations a “lifeline” that would help students start the academic year with confidence and motivation.

Speaking on behalf of OPay, the Corporate Social Responsibility Manager, Mr. Itoro Udo, reaffirmed the brand’s commitment to going beyond banking:

“At OPay, we believe that true impact comes from investing in the future of our communities. Project Equip is not just a CSR project; it reflects our philosophy of going ‘Beyond Banking.’ By equipping children with the resources they need to learn, we are investing in their dreams, their confidence, and the future of Nigeria.”

Also speaking at the event, Pastor Mrs Abosede Jayeola, representing Ifo Local Government Education Area (LGEA), commended the partnership:

“This initiative comes at the right time, as many of our pupils face real challenges returning to school without basic supplies. What REEL Foundation and OPay have done today is more than charity—it is empowerment. It will not only encourage attendance but also inspire our teachers and parents to continue supporting these children.”

The event drew warm appreciation from parents who witnessed first-hand the joy on their children’s faces. For the pupils, it was more than receiving bags and books—it was a message of hope, belonging, and the reassurance that their education matters.
