Substance-Driven Coalition vs Hype-Driven Coalition, The Power Of Silent Strategy Over Social Media Noise

Posted on April 25, 2025

In today’s Nigerian political landscape, two distinct coalitions have taken shape. One is strategic, composed, focused on the people, and quietly effective. The other is loud, driven by self-interest, fueled by vengeance, and filled with boastfulness but lacking in substance.

Though subtle in its operation, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s coalition is steadily redrawing the map of national political allegiance. This silent coalition, rooted in realpolitik, has proven adept at absorbing former opponents and drawing key stakeholders from across party lines, especially from the fractured ranks of the opposition. It is expanding and stabilising the polity, pulling even governors who once stood in direct opposition into its fold. This strategic approach has ensured that Tinubu’s administration is not just governing, but also transforming.

Contrast this with the so-called opposition coalition, a noisy gathering of discontented actors whose most potent weapons seem to be hatred, vengeance, self-entitlement, hashtags, and hollow declarations on social media. While they strive to dominate digital platforms with fiery rhetoric and trend-setting hashtags, their impact in real terms, especially on the ground, remains negligible. The People’s Democratic Party (PDP), once the leading opposition force, is now in disarray, haemorrhaging politically and steadily losing influence, leadership, and credibility. Despite its repeated feeble attempts to rally opposition sentiment, the likes of the desperate relic, Atiku Abubakar, forever running, never arriving, are visibly losing steam and cannot maintain cohesion or a coherent strategy. What remains of his political capital is being quietly and systematically dismantled by a governing party that understands power beyond performance.

Even the much-hyped murmurs of rebellion from disgruntled elements like Nasir El-Rufai, the self-appointed political maverick with a penchant for chaos and his so-called band of ‘ideological purists’, have fizzled into insignificance. Their efforts, devoid of broad-based appeal or political structure, are more disruptive than constructive. Despite the initial buzz, they struggle to gain traction, lacking the cerebral wherewithal, governance wisdom, political clout, momentum and machinery to challenge the incumbent.

President Tinubu’s team, meanwhile, continues to stay focused by delivering reforms, forging partnerships, and expanding influence not through noise but through tangible action and inclusion.

*What we are witnessing is a masterclass in political strategy. President Tinubu’s coalition doesn’t need to shout; it wins by results. While the opposition clings to the illusion of relevance through curated outrage and performative solidarity, the real coalition, which operates with deliberate tact and strategic humility, is scripting a new political order*.

Coalition vs. coalition? The scoreboard speaks for itself.
