Suspect, 54, Docked For Swindling Man Of N7.5m Under False Pretence

A 54-year old suspect, Adewale Adeyemo, has been arrested and charged in Lagos State for allegedly swindling a man, Armstrong Okagbare, to the tune of the sum of N7.5m under false pretence. 

 

P.M.EXPRESS reports that the incident happened at Ipaja area of Lagos, where the suspect, Adeyemo, met the complainant, Okagbare.

 

According to the Police, the suspect met the complainant and told him that he was a business man who imported goods from abroad. He asked him to give him the money in question in order to clear his goods from the port. He assured that he will sell the said goods within three months and refund him the money.

 

The complainant believed and gave him the money based on the agreement they reached that he will clear the goods from the port, sell and refund the money to the complainant.

 

However, after the suspect collected the money, he bolted away and disconnected every communication he had with the complainant and went into hiding.

 

The matter was reported to the Police at Ipaja Division. The Police moved into action, eventually arrested the suspect and detained him at the station for interrogation over his alleged conduct.

 

During interrogation, the suspect admitted to have collected the money under false pretence and had no goods to clear at the port and have no money to refund him because he had spent the whole money.

 

The Police found him culpable and consequently charged him before the Ogba Magistrate Court for the alleged offence which attracts several years of imprisonment.

 

He pleaded not guilty.

 

The prosecutor, Supol Benedict Aigbokhan, asked the Court to give a date for hearing since he pleaded not guilty to enable the Police to prove that he actually committed the alleged offence.

 

 

The Presiding Magistrate, K.A. Ariyo, granted him bail in the sum of N1m with two sureties in like sum, who must show evidence of means of livelihood and tax payment while addresses will be verified by the Court.

 

The matter was adjourned till 7th October, 2024, for mention while the defendant was remanded in custody at the correctional center at Kirikiri town, Lagos, pending when he will perfect his bail conditions.
