It was thrills and frills as the 2-in-1 Traditional Sports Championships for Secondary Schools Students end at the Campos Mini Stadium, Lagos at the weekend.

The three-day event, which featured 200 students from 20 schools selected from five education districts in Lagos, was part of the effort of the Lagos State Sports Commission to popularise lesser sports in the state especially in the schools.

To the Director General of the Sports Commission, Mr Adewunmi Ogunsanya, “What is happening in Lagos Sports now is a conscious effort to reactivate our lesser sports and at the same time develop and groom young talents from these sports. We just had Cricket and last weekend there was Rugby, the Hockey League is ongoing, we will soon have softball and baseball tournament. We want to make sure that no sports is left behind in the all round development of sports from the grassroots in Lagos.

“I’m happy that in the process of developing these sports, we are equally discovering a pool of talents who will in the long run add values to overall development of sports in the state.”

Chairman of Lagos State Traditional Sports Association, Bashir Augusto said that no fewer than 18 athletes were discovered among the students in Ayo during the competition, while scores of other were outstanding in other games.

He commended the support the association received from the Sports Commission towards the organisation of the 2 in 1 Traditional Sports Championships.

In Ayo male category, Oke Joshua of Lagos City College, Sabo-Yaba came first, while Nsurum Sunday from Akoka Junior High school and Agoro Babatunde, Ewutuntun Senior Grammar School, Oshodi, came second and third respectively.

In the female Ayo game, the first position went to Aminu Khadijat of Lafiaji Senior High School, second was Omosuyi Atomise of Ajeromi Ifelodun Senior High School, while Sanni Blessing from Aunty Ayo Girls Comprehensive High School, Ikoyi came third.

Cardoso Senior High School, Ijora Bada came first in Abula male category, while Ajeromi Ifelodun Senior High School and Herbert Macaulay Junior High School, Ebute-Meta were in the second and third position respectively.

In Abula girls category, Ajeromi Ifelodun Senior High School was first, while Akete Senior Grammar School, Lagos Island and Onike Junior Secondary School, Yaba came second and third respectively.

Awards were given to outstanding schools and students during the closing ceremony. In Abula event, Best School Performance in the boys category is Ajeromi Ifelodun Senior High School; Best Player was Ayinla Lateef of Cardoso Senior High School; Best Server was Uche Kalu from Ajeromi Ifelodun Senior High School and Best Receiver, Aiyepe Sheriff of Ajeromi Ifelodun Senor High School.

In the girls Abula, the Best Player was Nba Sandra from Ajeromi Ifelodun Senor High School; Best Server was Nze Adaeze from Ajeromi Ifelodun Senior High School while the Best Receiver was Yaya Yetunde of Eko Akete Senior Grammar School, Lagos Island.
