Despite the turn down of Police at Area H, Ogudu, to support the rally organised by the Youth Democratic Party of Nigeria (YDPN), to create awareness, educate and conscientise the people about the coming registration of voters by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which is stated to start on the 28th June, 2021, the YDPN party executives decided to stage the awareness at their Shomolu Secretariat during their first physical meeting and inauguration of party executives for the Local Government on Friday 9th of April, 2021.

YDPN, which is a youth party that was born out of the #EndSARS saga that took place in the country on the 20th October, 2020, is a platform created by the youth to proffer solution to the numerous problems facing Nigeria and for the youth to have a voice and also participate in the governance of the country.

Speaking at the event, Comrade Adesegun Adelana, the Deputy Coordinator of YDPN in Lagos State, advised the youth to shun social vices threw more light on the activities of the youth .

Adesegun said, “What we are doing here is not only here but it cut across the Federal Republic of Nigeria; it is what is required from us from INEC for the completion of the registration of our party and also to launch the official branch of YDPN in Shomolu Local Government”.

Comrade Adesegun, who was not happy about the turn down of rally by the Police boss at Area H, further said, “Secondly, we tried to seek for approval for this gathering because we planned to go round from Shomolu to Bariga to talk to the people about this party and also to educate and encourage them to come out for the registration of voters coming up from the 28th June, 2021. A way of enlightening, educating and conscientising the people of the need to come out for voters card registration but the Area Commander Area H, ACP Adeniyi, refused to approve the outing stating that it is a political party outing and that the CP is the only person to approve the sensitisation despite informing him that a letter has been send to the CP himself. He insisted the letter send to the CP has to be copied to him and not sending him a different copy and thereby ordered his DPOs to stop us from going out to inform the people about the registration of voters card which i don’t think same treatment can also apply to other political parties”.

In order to avoid the breakdown of law and order, Comrade Adesegun said they decided to have their programme at the Party  Secretariat instead of going up and down to avoid any insecurities cited by the DPOs.

According to him, “We are peace loving people and we don’t want them to indict or stop our registration in anyway”.

Comrade Adelana also advised the youth to shun cultism, thuggery, hooliganism and stopped being used by politicians to carry out devilish acts but should all channel their strength to nation building.

The SouthWest Vice Chairman of the party, Comrade Segun Oduola, said the party is working with great care and perseverance to enlightening the youth on why they should come out to join the moving train.
He said there is the issue of sidelining the youth in governance and at the moment a lot of the youth are waking up to this reality and they know it is time for them to take over and contribute their quota to the nation building.

He admonished the older people at the helm of affairs in the country to retire and give way for fresh hands to come on board.

According to him, “It is essential for you the older generation to retire from whatever position you are, for it is not negotiable for fresh hands to come on board. People much younger and vibrant, who can make use of their mental strength to showcase and maximize their potentials in the process. I believe with that mentality, the youth are ready to take over” he concluded.

Speaking also, one of the Youth Leaders in Ward B in Shomolu Local Government, Comrade Elabraham Egbeyemi, said the Government of Nigeria has always favoured individuals who come from known families.

According to him, “If you’re a nobody, no matter how good you’re, the Government does not recognize you; they don’t give you the opportunity to be somebody. We decided that we are going to have a party and a structure that is going to give people opportunities based on merit, opportunities you labour for, school for and also train for it”.

“It is essential for you the older generation to retire for fresh and young minds to takeover.”
