The death of a 40-year old single lady recently in Lagos has exposed the dangers families face as a result of having floor tiles in their various homes.

The victim simply identified as Jacinta visited her sister in Lagos, went to the toilet to ease herself, her leg slipped and she fell down on the floor tiles; she died in the process due to that domestic accident.

P.M.EXPRESS reports that the incident happened at Governor’s Road in Ikotun area of Lagos where her sister resided with her family.

She bled profusely, was rushed to Subon private hospital in Ikotun area and the doctor referred her to LASUTH in Ikeja for treatment. However, before the doctors could attend to her, she was already dead and they merely certified her dead. Her corpse was deposited at the mortuary for autopsy report.

It was gathered that the late Jacinta was invited by her sister from the Eastern part of the country for her to attend a programme in the area. The visit turned to tragedy as she was said to have gone to the toilet and the water on the floor of the toilet made her slip and she hit her head on the floor tiles, bled profusely and later died. The issue has raised a lot of concern over the use of floor tiles which were said to have inflicted permanent injuries on the victims and sometimes death.

According to one of the victims, Mrs. Lara Ubaka, recalled how she nearly died due to domestic accident from floor tiles which kept her permanently disfigured.
She narrated how she woke up in the morning to prepare for work and went to their bathroom to shower. She said that she had already finished bathing and was coming out from the bathroom when her legs slipped and she fell down on the tiles. She hit her waist on the floor tiles, raised alarm and was rushed to the hospital where she was admitted for over four months. Though, she did not die but the domestic accident gave her a permanent injury and she cannot walk without the aid of a walking stick.

Another Victim, Mr. Tobias Ekedum, said that he got his leg broken after he fell down in his home as he attempted to change an electric bulb. After the domestic accident, he was in the hospital for several months. Ekedum said he had climbed a small table to change the bulb and after changing it he wanted to come down, before he slipped on the floor tiles and broke his right leg.

Some other victims narrated similar experiences and concluded that the floor tiles in various homes were indeed good but sometimes they were death warrants in various homes and needed serious caution for safety.

The corpse of Late Jacinta was still laying in the mortuary and the sister she visited was in dilemma on how to tell the family about happened.
