The revolution in the waste management in Lagos is set to begin next week as the leading waste management company, Visionscape Sanitation Solutions, begin operations across the State with the rolling out of their contract for the Cleaner Lagos Initiative (CLI) in Agege.

P.M.EXPRESS gathered that the company has received a consignment of a brand new additional 100 vehicle waste management fleet embedded with cutting-edge technology.

The shipment consists of a series of waste trucks, from various rear end loaders to operational vehicles as part of the company initial investment in the first phase of the waste management system in the State.

“The addition to the waste management fleet is in line with our commitment to provide integrated waste management services, using state-of-the-art equipment and innovative solutions to help transform megacities,”  Thomas Forgacs, Chief Operations Officer, Visionscape, told journalists on Wednesday.

“In the last six months, we have surveyed all of Lagos State and collated vital data to aid operations. We, therefore, understand population density of the communities and areas that will be serviced, even up to the number of streets and households across the State. This preliminary assessment has aided us to know the amount of waste that will be generated in any particular location,” he added.

The Visionscape boss disclosed that the company is determined to make the change in the waste management system thus it has invested about $50 million (N18.05 billion) into the project’s first phase.

He added that Visionscape would kick off the next phase of the Cleaner Lagos Initiative next week in Agege, Lagos as machinery would be deployed in full force to the area, adding that apart from this, the body had been engaged in cleaning about 1,000 black spots within the metropolis and carted away 80,000 tons of refuse, with the deployment of 600 Galvanised Waste Bins.

Forgacs said Visionscape would be deploying additional 3,000 Galvanised Waste Bins to different parts of the state from next week.

He added that in the next two months, the body was expected to deploy total of 20,000 Galvanised Waste Bins across the state.

He also revealed that the company would be deploying one million plastic bins across the state next week, adding that sanitation sweepers would be deployed to various parts of the state as from Thursday, January 11.

The Cleaner Lagos Initiative was established to address, enforce and regulate the challenges in the solid waste management systems within Lagos State.

The initiative is focused on improving the environment to make it cleaner, safer and healthier for all Lagos State residents, as well as developing operational efficiency.

The state government has expressed determination to ensure that the Cleaner Lagos Initiative succeeded as it had not relented in creating awareness about the environmental initiative.

Visionscape is currently in a public-private partnership with the State Government, and it will provide management services for the Cleaner Lagos Initiative, under the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA).

Visionscape currently holds the residential waste collection contract for the State, and the management of three operating waste transfer loading stations, which are currently being renovated, under LAWMA. It has also begun construction of West Africa’s first engineered landfill in Epe.
