It was a celebration of joy and re-union for the 1967/71 Set of Lagos Anglican Girls Grammar School when they gathered on Sunday to mark 50 years of leaving their former secondary school in Surulere, Lagos, southwest Nigeria.

More than 40 old students attended the Sunday thanksgiving service held at the Church of Nigeria Anglican Communion, Surulere before proceeding to a well-packaged reception where the old students, families, well-wishers, relations and friends dine and wine together to celebrate the goodness of God in the lives of the old students.

Commenting on the significance of celebrating 50 years of leaving school, the chairperson of the planning committee, Pastor (Mrs) Kehinde Okunnowo expressed gratitude to God for making her and her colleagues alive to witness the 50th anniversary of leaving school.

According to her, some of the students who passed out of the school together were no more but thanked God for keeping them alive despite the challenges of the country.

“It is a great privilege that we are alive to witness this programme. Some of our colleagues had died years ago, while some died recently. I want to say that we are not better than them, but we thank the Almighty God for His grace upon those who are still alive,” she said.

Okunnowo revealed that they are not only coming together to the merriment alone but to contribute their own quota to the development of the school.

She disclosed that the 1967/71 Set renovated the Principal’s office as part of their contribution to the progress of the school.

She said there are many challenges facing the school, but the 1967/71 set, for now, took up the renovation and furnishing of the Principal’s office to a befitting standard and promised that they would do more in the nearest future.

“When we see the list of demands the school needs, we observed that the one we felt we can do quickly is the renovation of the Principal’s office which we commissioned today (Sunday). I want to create the indulgence of other Sets to assist the school in their own little way for the betterment of the students,” she said.

Okunnowo, however, advised the students to remain steadfast and focused on their academics, even as she urged them to shun any vices that can ruin their academic pursuits.

She also admonished her colleagues to imbibe the spirit of love and fear of God in whatever they are doing, adding that only the people who have fear of God would be able to extend the hands of love to their colleagues and the community at large.

In her remarks, the current Principal of Anglican Girls Grammar School, Mrs Folashade Ogedengbe commended the old students for the renovation and furnishing of her office. She called on other old students to take a cue from what the 1967/71 Set did.

Ogedengbe said the anniversary was an opportunity for the old students to see themselves again after leaving the school 50 years ago and prayed for their good health and long life.

One of the highlights of the event was the recognition and presentation of awards to the past Principal of the school, Mrs B. Philips, teachers and the special guest of honour, Olasubomi Iginla-Aina.
