2 Arrested For Stealing Couple’s N10m Cash Gifts During Marriage Ceremony

A 41-year old man, Madebayo Adewalem and a 27-year old woman, Rukayat Oyinkansola Shonibare, have landed in trouble in Lagos State for allegedly stealing a couple’s N10m cash gifts and some Dollars sprayed on them by guests during their wedding ceremony at an event center. 
P.M.EXPRESS reports that the incident happened on 8th February, 2025 at Classique Event Centre along Kudirat Abiola Way, Oregun area of Ikeja, Lagos, where the couple organized the wedding ceremony.
According to the Police, while the couple were dancing, guests who attended the wedding sprayed them money and the suspects were picking the money and keeping inside a bag.
However, after the weeding, all the Dollars sprayed on them were missing including the Naira notes. The suspects were asked what happened to the money but they were unable to explain.
The matter was reported to the Police at Alausa Division. They were arrested and detained at the station for interrogation over their alleged conduct.
After interrogation, the Police found them culpable and consequently charged them before the Ogba Magistrate Court for the alleged conspiracy and stealing under the Criminal Laws of the State.
The charges read:
That you, Adebayo Adewale and Rukayat Oyinkansola Shonibare and others at large on the 8th day of February, 2025, at Classique Event Centre along Kudirat Abiola Way, Oregun, Ikeja Lagos State, in the Ikeja Magisterial District, did conspire among yourselves to commit Felony to Wit Stealing and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 412 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria 2015.”
COUNT II:  ‘That you, Adebayo Adewale ‘M’ and others at large on the same Date and Place in the said Magisterial District, did steal about Ten Million Naira and some United States Dollars note being the money gifted to the couple, Mr. & Mrs. Adeniyi Oluwasegun, during their Marriage ceremony at Classique Event Center Kudirat Abiola Way, Oregun, Lagos State and thereby committed an offence able under section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria 2015.
“That you, Rukayat Oyinkansola Shonibare ‘F’ on the 16th day of February, 2025 at No. 3 Yowu Street Oremu, Ikorodu, Lagos State did receive Six Hundred and Twelve Two Hundred Naira (N612,200:00) and Two Hundred United State Dollars from Adebayo Adewale ‘M’ belonging to the couple having reason to believe the money was stolen and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 328 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria.”
However, they pleaded not guilty.
The prosecutor, Supol Akeem Raji, asked the Court to give a date for hearing since they pleaded not guilty to enable the Police to prove that they actually committed the alleged offence.
The Presiding Magistrate, Mrs. O. Kusanu, granted them bail with two sureties, who must show evidence of means of livelihood and tax payment while addresses will be verified by the Court.
The matter was adjourned for mention while the defendants were remanded in custody at the correctional center at Kirikiri town, Lagos, pending when they will perfect their bail conditions.
