Posted on November 28, 2017

A scrabble competition to open up the game to the students at the grassroots is currently underway in the ancient city of Badagry.

The third edition of Ola- Oki Lagos Scrabble Competition, a developmental programme, which commenced in 2015, had since began at Ola Oki Medical Centre, lbereko, Badagry on Monday.

The programme is in collaboration with Dr. Olabodunrin Waheed Oki; an avid scrabble player, lover of the sport and the current chairman of Lagos State Office of Disability Affairs (LASODA).

PM EXPRESS reports that Oki’s dream of organizing a scrabble competition was brought to fruition by the joint efforts and synergy of Badagry Zonal Sports Officers deployed by the Lagos State Sports Commission.

The primary objective of its birth was in the proliferation of the game of Scrabble which will help in improving students ‘word power’ and their intelligent quotient. It will also enhance and foster healthy rivalry amongst schools and build social interaction amongst the participating schools.

The competition was adopted by the State Government in 2017 in fulfilment of the promise of Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode at the Town Hall meeting held in the Badagry Division on Tuesday 12th July, 2016 as part of the State Government’s efforts of promoting sports development and ensuring an all inclusive governance.

The 2017 edition of the Ola-Oki Lagos Scrabble is geared towards expansion of the scope of the competition through His Excellency’s support thereby decentralizing the concentration of sports events in the central Lagos alone.

A total of 300 students are participating in this years’ edition of the competition.

The programme began on Monday with registration and pairing of participants. The tournament ends on Wednesday.
