Lagos State Lauds MATAC Kiddies Taekwondo Championship

Chairman of Lagos State Taekwondo Federation, Jimmy Ogunowo has commended the organizer of the annual MATAC Kiddies Taekwondo Championship, Grandmaster Peter Awodi for using the tournament to further develop the game at the grassroots.

He made the commendation at the just concluded 4th edition of the competition held at the Police College, Hall, Ikeja, Lagos.

According to him, the large turnout of kids, certified referees and officials coupled with the Olympic type medals presented to participants at the U17 tournament is worthy of commendation, noting that the state will not only leverage on it and similar grassroots tournaments but will soon open discussions Coach Awodi on how he will help the association further develop the game in the state.

“I’m highly impressed with the tournament and the standard of the organization and with the way things are going, we might be having a national open MATAC championship in future.
You know that Grandmaster Awodi was a former Lagos coach

“Right now, we’ve prepared a schedule for many grassroots events next year. We are also going to partner, with a lot of grassroots coaches and organizers of this type of event to ensure there’s no full moment in 2022”, he stressed.

In his remark, Grandmaster Awodi while announcing that those who won medals will undergo further training and plans underway for a successful 5th edition just as he stated that he is available to work for Lagos State when invited.

Meanwhile, at the end of the tournament, Adetumi Adesope emerged as the overall best male athlete while that of the female went to Daniyat Mohamed.

The overall best team award went to Divine Upspring taekwondo club with the second position going to Sportlight taekwondo team.

Medals, trophies and certificates were presented to participants. About 200 kids from 30 schools and 6 clubs took part in the one-day event.
