The federal government, through the Association of Power Generation Companies (APGC’s), has grown the power capacity of the national grid from 13, 000 megawatts recorded a few years ago to about 14,000 MW.

A statement by APGC’s Executive Secretary, Dr. Joy Ogaji, indicates that the increase was due to the addition of $1.3 billion Niger state-based 700 MW Zungeru hydroelectric plant that came on stream in the second quarter of the year.

“The national grid now has an installed power generation capacity of about 14, 000 megawatts, and this was made possible due to the Zungeru plant that came on stream this year,” she said, adding that it was an opportunity for interested investors to partner with the Gencos.” He said.

In February, the Federal Government announced Mainstream Energy Solution Limited as the preferred bidder for the concession of the plant.

The company had offered a fee of $700 million per year for a period of 30 years to operate the plant.
