Police operatives in Plateau State have arrested two doctors, Yusuf Abdullahi and Philip Bwede Dachung, owners of the Murna Clinic and Maternity, for allegedly harvesting a housewife’s kidney at the hospital during surgery.
P.M.EXPRESS reports that the incident happened at Nasarawa Gwom neighbourhood of the Jos North Local Government Area of the State.
The victim, Mrs. Kehinde Kamaru, suffered her fate after she went to the hospital for surgery, she was induced with drugs and she became unconscious before her kidney was harvested during the operation.
However, the alleged organ theft was later discovered after the woman had complications and a test was conducted on her. It was then discovered that her kidney had been removed.
Thus, the matter was reported to the Police and the suspects were arrested. They were charged before the Court on four counts of alleged organ theft from Mrs. Kehinde Kamaru.
They were before the Presiding judge, Justice Gidelia Fwomyon, having been detained for two months for the alleged offence, which attracts several years of imprisonment.
The defendants are facing a four-count charge of criminal conspiracy, attempted culpable homicide, causing severe injury, and dealing in human parts.
However, they pleaded not guilty.
The prosecution opposed the defence attorney’s request for bail for the defendants at the beginning of the hearing on the grounds that the charges were serious and there was no assurance that the defendants will not  obstruct trial proceedings.
Having heard the parties on the matter, Justice Fwomyon denied the defendants bail application and ordered their remand in custody and adjourned the matter for further hearing.
