The reactions of Nigerians to the reported offer made to Victor Osimhen by a Saudi Arabian football club have sparked widespread discussion, especially on social media. Football enthusiasts and even those unfamiliar with the sport have weighed in, with many urging the reigning African Footballer of the Year and king of Napels (a title he earned following his stellar performance that ended Napoli’s scudetto drought after 32-years wait) to accept the lucrative deal and move to Saudi Arabia, rather than staying in Europe to build his legacy.
This reaction highlights a broader issue within the Nigerian society—a prevailing inclination towards money over values and long-lasting legacies. It reflects a mindset that prioritizes immediate financial gain over the pursuit of enduring impact, whether in sports, governance, religion, or any other sector.
It is disheartening to imagine a player of Osimhen’s calibre, who has reached the pinnacle of Europe and African football, potentially moving to a league with little global recognition or visibility, simply because of the monetary gains invioved and not for the legacy and passion for the round leather game.
This situation underscores a deeper problem: the scarcity of individuals who are driven by the desire to leave a meaningful legacy, rather than being motivated solely by monetary gains which unfortunately has turned everything around us, an avenue to eradicate individual poverty rather than societal good. It’s a sad reflection of the values that seem to dominate our society today.
