Sports Minister, Lagos SWAN Congratulate Obi, Re-elected AIPS Africa Boss

The Minister of Youth and Sports, Barrister Solomon Dalung has congratulated Mitchell Obi who was re-elected unopposed as the AIPS Africa President.

Also the new Executive of Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, SWAN, Lagos chapter has hailed the re-election of the Nigerian as the President of AIPS Africa.

In a statement, Barrister Dalung said the latest development demonstrates the leadership role of Nigeria as a big brother on the African continent.

He urged more Nigerians to get into leadership positions in international politics which will augur well not only for Nigeria’s sports but other sectors.

“The Federal Government will continue to appreciate and support Nigerians aspiring to key political positions at international levels to influence decisions affecting the country’s sports and other sectors.”

The Minister urged members of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) to support Mitchell, who he described as an exemplary Nigerian to succeed as the African President of International Sports Press Associations.

“I advise that all parties set aside their differences and come together for the unity of the association. I hope that the election will pave way for more Nigerians to benefit from the numerous career opportunities as a result of AIPS’ partnership with international sports associations.”

Meanwhile, Lagos SWAN congratulated one of its members, Mitchell Obi who was re-elected unopposed as the AIPS Africa President for another four years.

The Lagos SWAN executive said the return of Mitchell at the Africa Congress in Nairobi, Kenya on Monday, December 18, 2018 was a testimony to his achievements and status as a global icon in the industry.

In a statement signed by the Lagos SWAN Chairman, Debo Oshundun on Thursday, he praised the CEO of Mastersports International for his contribution to the development of sports as critical stakeholder.

“We are so elated about this latest development.

“Here in Lagos, he is one of our revered leaders who have continued to provide the needed direction for us as individuals and association.

“Even as a cub reporter, he distinguished himself as one destined for bigger things.

“Presently, when it comes to global reckoning, he is the number 1 sports journalist in Africa by virtue of his position,’’Oshundun said.

The Lagos SWAN chairman is upbeat that his continued leadership of AIPS Africa will continue to uplift the standard of sports reporting on the continent and at the global stage where he doubles as one of the Vice-Presidents at the global level.

“As a chapter of SWAN with the largest number of members, we hope to work closely with AIPS to provide a platform for our members to explore opportunities that will improve their professional standing.

“The strength of present day Lagos SWAN members lies with our young and vibrant members.

“We will work closely with AIPS Africa so that these vibrant members can tap into such opportunities and realize their potentials,’’the SWAN president added.

The EXCO has felicitated with its members who were recently appointed as members of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) standing committees.

The immediate past chairman of Lagos SWAN, Fred Edoreh was named alongside Tony Ubani, Nneka Ikem, Ade Ojeikere, Gowon Akpodonor and George Aluo as members of the media and publicity committee.

While the Women Football Committee, has, Chisom Mbonu the immediate past Vice-Chairperson of the association as member.

Tobi Adepoju was appointed as a member of the Players Status Committee.

The Lagos SWAN EXCO described the appointments as a welcome development and a confirmation of the integral role of the media in sports development.

“We thank the leadership of NFF under Amaju Melvin Pinnick for this deserved recognition of our members and by extension our association.

“These people have paid their dues and I am confident in their ability to deliver.

“I am so happy with the appointment of a young Tobi Adepoju. His appointment will inspire others to strive for greatness,’’he said.

Oshundun enjoined those appointed to see their appointment as a call to service, as he promised to support the leadership of the NFF; through objective criticism and comprehensive reportage of the federation’s activities.
