Posted on October 8, 2024

The Government College Ojo Old Students Association (GCOSA) recently donated two Dialysis Machines to the General Hospital Badagry to commemorate its 50th Founders’ Day Anniversary.

Receiving the donated Dialysis Machines, the Medical Director/CEO of the Hospital, Dr. Olatunde Bakare, appreciated the donors for the laudable gesture, noting that the huge and critical equipment would enhance the facility’s infrastructural growth and service delivery.

Dr. Bakare stated further that the new acquisition would speed up the commencement of operations in the dialysis centre at the facility to care for residents with renal impairment problems across the state.

His words, “I am highly elated to witness a kind gesture of this magnitude. It is a huge service to humanity, especially to the esteemed people of Badagry and its environs, the general public and Lagos State health sector”.

He also used the opportunity to appreciate members of the 404B4 Nigeria Lion’s Club led by its Past Council Chairperson and Past District Governor for 2015/16, Lion Idowu Anobili and the current District Governor, Lion Taiwo Fatoki for donating the edifice used by the hospital for running the Eye Clinic for many years, adding that the building would also serve as Dialysis Centre to the Hospital.

The President of the Government College Ojo Old Students Association (GCOSA) Otunba Atinuke Alex-Oni commended the Lagos State Government for providing a conducive environment to donate the equipment to the hospital, imploring the facility to ensure that the items are used to serve the best purpose intended by the Association as a give-back to the community.

Dr. James Ojo, who was the first Senior Prefect of the Government College Ojo when the school was founded in 1974, went down memory lane on how the hospital provided them health services and served as a football ground many years back, expressing satisfaction at the level of development at the hospital presently.

The Chairman of the Association’s Planning Committee, Mr. Olumide Enoch Moye, expressed happiness that the idea to donate the items is eventually realised, just as he thanked the members for their presence and immense contributions towards the project.

  1. Dialysis machines are impressive but also extremely expensive. And dialysis is only a stop-gap. Average life expectancy on dialysis is only two to three years.

Prevention of kidney failure would be much better from the patient’s point of view, as well as society’s. Dialysis patients can’t work, and cost society USD $100,000 per patient per year.

Fortunately, dialysis has been mostly preventable for over thirty years. Diabetes and high blood pressure cause 90% of chronic kidney failure. The remaining 10% of patients with kidney failure could get a cadaver kidney (from a deceased person). The country could be dialysis-free within five years.

Why nobody has heard of my protocol yet is an interesting story in itself. Healthcare seems far more interested in naked profit than public health.
