Leading The Charge – Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi’s Vision For A Renewable Energy-Powered Nigeria
Posted on October 14, 2024
Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi, the Director-General/CEO of Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN), appeared on NTA News Weekend File on Saturday, Oct. 12th, 2024, where he discussed about “Harnessing Renewable Energy in Nigeria: Strategies for Effective Supervision & Coordination”.
During the program, he emphasized the global shift from fossil fuels to greener energy sources, known as ‘Energy Transition.’ The Energy Commission aims to triple renewable energy generation through domestication and localization of technology like solar panels, making energy accessible to all. Nigeria has abundant lithium resources, and the commission encourages investors to set up lithium battery factories locally.
He said, at the recent G20 working group in Brazil, Dr. Abdullahi noted Africa’s minimal contribution to greenhouse gas emissions, yet severe climate change impact. Nigeria and other African countries received a positive response from the G20 bodies, pledging climate finance support. Dr. Abdullahi stressed that renewable energy is the cheapest and easiest electricity source, crucial for energy security.
He further stated that the commission is building solar PV factories in Sokoto, Nsukka (Enugu State), and Abuja, which will generate job opportunities once completed. The President’s Compressed Natural Gas initiative promotes cleaner, cheaper, and reliable energy. The commission has converted most of its vehicles to CNG.
Under his leadership, the Energy Commission is not just following the trends but driving innovation, positioning Nigeria as a front runner in sustainable energy development across Africa
