The Executive Chairman of Epe Local Government, Princess Surah Olayemi Animashaun, has expressed deep condolences to the families of the victims affected by the tragic accident that claimed three lives and left several others injured at Ayetoro Junction along the Lekki-Epe axis in Lagos on Monday.

The accident, which involved a cement truck belonging to Dangote Company, was reportedly caused by a brake failure while descending from Ita-Opo, causing it to collide with a tricycle and a parked Toyota Camry before careening into the Ayetoro market area.

In a statement released by the Office of the Council Chairman, the Chairman conveyed his heartfelt sympathies, saying, “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives in this tragic incident. We also extend our best wishes for the swift recovery of those who were injured and affected by this unfortunate event.”

The Chairman thanked emergency responders for their swift action at the scene, noting that their efforts have helped to manage the aftermath and mitigate further risks to the community.

Princess Animashaun appreciated the immediate concern shown by all the principal officers of the council from the Vice Chairman to the Executive and legislative members of the council and the entire management of Epe local government.

She also noted the timely intervention of the traditional rulers, market men and women, security personnel, the Youth of Epe and all other emergency responders too numerous to mention who swiftly responded to the distress call by the residents.

She assured residents that the local government is committed to supporting ongoing efforts to address the safety concerns of all road users.

“Ensuring the safety of our residents and commuters is a priority, and we will work closely with relevant agencies to prevent future occurrences of such tragedies on our roads”, the Chairman added.

Traffic diversions have been put in place along the Ita-Opo and Ayetoro routes to facilitate safer travel as authorities clear the site. The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has confirmed that the three deceased individuals have been transported to the Epe General Hospital morgue, while efforts continue to clear the wrecked vehicles and restore normalcy in the area.

Motorists and pedestrians are urged to follow redirected pathways to minimise disruptions and allow authorities to manage the situation effectively.
