Husband Sent To Prison For Allegedly Assaulting Wife Over Property Documents

Operatives of the Zone 2 Command of the Nigeria Police have arrested a 55-year old man, Gbenga Odunaya and charged him before a Lagos Magistrate’s Court for allegedly beating his wife, Muibat Laminant and inflicting  injuries on her for allegedly demanding for the documents of the house she used her money to build.

Police alleged that the complainant, Laminat reported to the Police that her father willed properly to her before he died and she sold the property for N11 million and deposited the money into her husband’s account.

She told the Police that while she used part of the money to build a house, her husband used the balance to buy vehicles adding that crises broke out between them when she allegedly separated from her husband and demanded for the documents of the house she used her money to build but her husband instead pounced on her, beat her mercilessly and inflicted injuries on her.

Police further alleged that following the development, the complainant petitioned the Assistant Inspector General of Police, AIG Adegoke Fayoade who swiftly directed his men  to arrest the defendant.

The defendant was charged before the Igbosere Magistrate’s Court sitting at the Tinubu Magistrate’s Court, Lagos Island on a two count charge bordering on  assault occasioning bodily harm and conducts likely to cause breach of peace.

Police Prosecuting Counsel, ASP Jimoh Joseph told the Court in the charge marked N/38/2024 that the defendant committed the offence in 2020 at Noforija area of Epe, Lagos.

Joseph informed the court that the defendant took the law into his hands by beating his wife and inflicting injuries on her instead of reporting the matter to the police for allegedly demanding for the documents of the house she used her money to build.

He said the offences, the defendant committed were punishable under sections 173 and 168 (4) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

Count one of the charge reads that, ‘you Gbenga Odunaya in year 2020 did assaulted Muibat Laminant  Noforija area of Epe, Lagos and inflicted injuries on her.

The defendant, however pleaded not guilty to the charges and Magistrate, Mr. Adetunji granted him N500,000 bail with two sureties in like sum.

Adetunji adjourned the case till 15 January, 2025 for mention and ordered that the defendant be detained at the Ikoyi Correctional facility till he perfected the bail conditions.
