The Director General of the South-East Governors Forum, Senator Uche Ekwunife, CON, has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic tanker accident that occurred along the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway, resulting in the loss of human lives.

In a statement released by her Press Secretary, Tony Ezike, Ekwunife extended her heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, the people of Enugu State, and the entire Southeast region.

“I am deeply saddened by this heartrending incident, which claimed the lives of innocent citizens. My thoughts and prayers are with the affected families, and I stand in solidarity with the people of Enugu State in this moment of grief.”

Ekwunife emphasized that the tragedy serves as a painful reminder of the urgent need for enhanced road safety measures, particularly for heavy-duty vehicles transporting inflammable products.

She however, commended Governor Peter Mbah for his swift and decisive response, noting that his personal visit to the accident scene and immediate intervention reflect his proactive leadership and commitment to public safety.

“Governor Mbah’s directive on the enforcement of anti-spill locks for tankers and his resolve to rehabilitate critical sections of the affected road demonstrate his unwavering dedication to safeguarding lives and property. His prompt actions will go a long way in preventing future occurrences.”

She further urged relevant agencies to strengthen regulatory enforcement to avert similar tragedies while reassuring that such setbacks should not hinder the ongoing development strides in Enugu State under Governor Mbah’s administration.

“May the souls of the departed rest in peace, and may God grant their families the strength to bear this irreparable loss,” she prayed.
