The Centre for Human and Socio-economic Rights (CHSR) led by their president, Comrade Alex Omotehinse, has commended the Lagos State House of Assembly and the Council Chairman for Agboyi-Ketu for the approval and registration of Orilowo Perishable Food Market Association after a long walk for freedom.
P.M.EXPRESS reports that he made the commendation during the press conference held in the market by the group and the Executives of the AIA Food Perishable Market association.
The president, Comrade Alex Omotehinse, stated that the approval was a long walk for freedom and thanked the State Assembly and the Council Chairman for their efforts to ensure it was a reality.
He explained that the group received Save Our Soul letter of request on 21st December, 2024, for assistance on denial of their market registration by Agboyi-Ketu Local Council Development Area with proof and copies of correspondent letter between the market association and the Council.
“CHSR as a reputable human and socio-economic rights organization whose aims and objectives is to stand as the mouth piece of vulnerable citizens on issues that affects their socio-economic life, on behalf of the market association then wrote a letter to both the office of Speaker of Lagos State House of Assembly and chairman of Agboyi-Ketu LCDA dated 22nd December, 2023.”
“On 4th January, 2024, CHSR with other civil society organizations led thousands of Orilowo Perishable Foods Market traders to Lagos Assembly on peaceful protest with a position letter requesting for the intervention of the Lagos Assembly to avert state of anarchy in Agboyi-Ketu council area over the denial of the market registration.”
“The protest delegation was received by then Majority Leader, Hon. Noheem Adams, who promised that the Assembly will definitely intervene as its their constitutional right.”
“On 5th January, 2024, CHSR received an invitation letter from Office of the Clerk to the House of Assembly to appear before the House Committee on Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs and Rural Development on Tuesday, 9th January, 2024.”
“The letter was written to us as the petitioner. So, we appeared before the committee with Orilowo Market traders and some civil society organizations, Agboyi-Ketu Council Chairman, the Council Manager, the Council revenue chairman, opposing market men and women and several council officers.”
“After an extensive engagement, the meeting was adjourned till 16th January, 2024, with the proviso that both parties should come along with their lawyers and provide proofs of market law to corroborate their assertion and positions. On the adjourned date Tuesday 16th January ,2024, the committee resolved that both parties can operate simultaneously while Orilowo Market perfecting their documentations.”
“But to our dismay, through the letter dated 7th March, 2024, titled “ Resolution of the House from Office of the Clerk to the Lagos State House of Assembly communicating resolution of the House plenary session of Tuesday, 27th February, 2024 which says otherwise.”
“CHRS wrote another complaint letter dated Friday, 12th April, 2024 to the office of the Speaker House of Assembly calling the attention to the House Committee Chairman’s interest and influence on the resolution. And a month after, we wrote a reminder letter dated Tuesday, 14th May, 2024 calling for need for urgent intervention to arrest the unrest within the community and harsh hunger status of the market traders.”
“Along the line, in their quest to stop the registration of this particular market, those who are opposing the registration of the Orilowo Perishable Foods Market for a reason best known to them took several steps and wrote different fictitious petitions to different government agencies to blackmail the market site.”
“It took the intervention of the CSHR through our letter dated Monday 26th February 2024 tittled: Clarion call for a thorough investigation and assessment before assigning your officers and men to carry out any action on the property situated at Plot 705 Ikorodu Road Owode Lagos State to stop agencies like Lagos State Task Force on Environmental and Special Offences, LAWMA from being misled or used by unscrupulous elements, who cooked and gave wrong information about the market site to the agencies dated Monday 4th March 2024.”
“After all this struggles, smiles were put on the faces of the traders when the House Committee on Judiciary, Public Petition and INEC under the chairmanship of Hon. Ladi Ajomale intervened and resolved the indifferences in the House resolution where all parties agreed to.”
“Therefore, the Orilowo Perishable Foods Market Association went further to perfect the documentation for the approval of the market, which was approved by the Agboyi-Ketu Local Council Development Area administration through an official provisional approval letter dated 15th January, 2025.”
“On behalf of Orilowo marketers, CHSR congratulates and appreciates the Executive Chairman of Agboyi-Ketu LCDA, Mayor Dele Oshinowo, for the approval of A.I.A Orilowo Perishable Food Market association against all odds for the market registration approval and to celebrate the market opening, which is the joy of the traders who have been home for over one year” Comrade Omotehinse stated.
