Anambra State Govt Cancels Chieftaincy Titles Bestowed On 21 Indigenes In Umuchu Town

Anambra State Government has canceled the purported controversial house to house Chieftaincy title code named “Nicodemus Chieftaincy title awards” given to 21 indigenes in Umuchu town, Aguata Local Government Area of the State. 

 

P.M.EXPRESS reports as was contained in a letter dated 19th February, 2025, to the President General of Umuchu Improvement Union, Chief Charles Ezenwabasili, through the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Community Affairs signed by Hon. Tony Collins Nwabunwanne.

 

 

In the letter with reference number, MLGCCA/CM/56/T/208 to the President General, Umuchu Improvement Union, it stated: “RE: SUPPORTING LETTER FOR “A CALL FOR GOVERNMENT INTERVENTION TO PROTECT UMUCHU CULTURAL HERITAGE AND CIVIC ADMINISTRATION”.

Kindly refer to the above subject.

I am in receipt of a complaint of brazen disregard to the directive from my office in a letter dated 17th December, 2024 and signed by my distinguished Permanent Secretary concerning the conferment of chieftaincy title in Umuchu community.”

2. In view of the above and having comfirmed the disregard of the Government’s directive, the Ministry maintains that any of such conferment, which is contrary to the aforementioned directive remains null and void. You are therefore, warned to desist from such act capable of breeding crisis in the community in future.”

 

3. You are further directed to comply with Government’s directive as captioned in paragraph 2 of this letter, failure which will attract serious sanction by the State Government.”

The letter directed complete compliance otherwise the State Government will sanction those concerned for parading themselves as Chiefs in the town, which may have ended the “Nicodemus Chieftaincy title” in Umuchu town.
