The President General of Otolo Nnewi, and Supervisory Counsellor for Works in the community, Mr. Amobi Adikwulu, has clarified that proper notifications were communicated to the community prior to the demolition activities associated with the dualization and construction of the Nwagu Agulu-Nnobi-Nnewi -Ozubulu-Okija Road, a project spearheaded by Governor Chukwuma Soludo.

The President General addressed recent media reports suggesting that the necessary due diligence was not conducted before the initiation of the project, emphasizing that no substantial new road construction had taken place in Nnewi for the past sixteen years, indicating a vital need for the current upgrades.

The road project has a 370-meter Spur and three Span Bridge Across Ulasi River.

While the lot one of the project is the 37.2 kilometer Nwagu Agulu-Nnobi-Nnewi Road, the 33.02 kilometre Nnewi-Ozubulu-Okija Road is the lot two.

According to him, notices about the construction requirements were distributed as early as November 2024, outlining that structures must maintain a setback of 47 meters from the road’s centerline and stated that the affected buildings were officially marked by the Ministry of Works who informed the people of the necessary adjustments.

He expressed regret over the misinformation circulating, stating that it does not reflect the views of the people of Nnewi.

Support for the project was echoed by the Mayor of Nnewi North Local Government Area, Mr. Echezona Anazodo, who listed several notable buildings impacted, including properties owned by Dim Odumegwu Ojukwu and Bianca Ojukwu, as well as Chief Ibeto’s building, among others.

Similarly, Mr. Austin Manuel, President of the Importers Association, and Prince Jude Osummuo, President General of Nzukora Nnewi, welcomed the demolition, citing its positive impact on businesses.

An affected business owner Mr. Innocent Onyeka Okoli, whose fuel station is among those undergoing demolition, also voiced his support for the project, urging residents to remain calm and embrace the ongoing development as a necessary step forward for the community.

Meanwhile, it was observed that work is advancing on the project.
