Edo Governorship: Monday Okpebholo Wins At The Supreme Court

Posted on July 10, 2025

The Supreme Court has upheld the election of Senator Monday Okpebholo as the duly elected governor of Edo State in the September 21, 2024 governorship election.

In a unanimous judgment delivered on Thursday morning, a five-member panel of the apex court led by Justice Mohammed Garba dismissed the appeal filed by Asue Ighodalo, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), seeking to nullify Okpebholo’s victory.

Justice Garba ruled that the appellants failed to substantiate their claims that Okpebholo did not secure lawful votes during the election. He added that the PDP and its candidate also did not provide sufficient evidence to show that the decisions of both the election tribunal and the Court of Appeal were flawed or perverse.

“The appeal is hereby dismissed for lacking in merit, and the judgment affirms the decisions of the tribunal and the Court of Appeal,” Garba stated.

With this ruling, the apex court has put an end to the legal battle over the governorship seat, reaffirming Okpebholo’s mandate.
