Man, 35, Arraigned For Swindling Victim Of N5m With Online Sale Of Non-Existing Lexus Car

A 35-year old man, Monday Shonde, has been arrested and charged in Lagos State for allegedly swindling a man, Mutiu Obisesan, to the tune of N5m under the false pretence of selling a Lexus car but it turned out to be a scam. 
P.M.EXPRESS reports that the incident happened on 26th June, 2025, at Dayo Adeniji Street, New Oko – Oba, Abule Egba, Lagos.
According to the Police, the suspect displayed the Lexus EX330 Saloon car with registration number GGE 154 JQ for sale on his phone and deceived the complainant to make payment into an account of one Margaret Eboh Agbo F,  Moniepoint Account No. 5055740627
However, after he received the money, he bolted away and disconnected every communication he had with the complainant. He did not return the money or supply the car.
The matter was reported to the Police at Oko-Oba Division. The operatives moved into action, eventually arrested and detained him at the station for interrogation over his alleged conduct.
After thorough interrogation, the Police found him culpable and charged him before the Ogba Magistrate Court for the alleged offence, which attracts several years of imprisonment.
The charges read:
COUNT 1: “That you, MONDAY SHONDE “M” and others now at large on the 26th day of June 2025 at about 16:55HRS at Dayo Adeniji Street, New Oko – Oba Abule egba, Lagos State, in the Ikeja Magisterial District, did conspire together to commit felony to wit obtaining money under false pretense and stealing and hereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos tate of Nigeria 2015.”
COUNT II: “That you, MONDAY SHONDE “M”, and others now at large on the same date, time and place at the aforementioned Magisterial District, did obtain the sum of Five Million Naira (5,000,000) from one MUTIU OBISESAN “M” of number 5 Akingbade Street Obantoko, Abeokuta, Ogun State under false retense to sell a LEXUS EX 330 SALON CAR WITH REG. NUMBER GGE 154JQ, BROWN COLOUR to him and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 314 of the criminal law of Lagos State 2015.”
COUNT III: “That you, MONDAY SHONDE “M”, on the same date, time and place at the aforementioned magisterial district, did conduct yourself in a manner to cause breach of peace by displaying on your phone LEXUS EX 330 SALON CAR WITH REG. NUMBER GGE 154JQ, BROWN COLOUR, for sale and deceived one MUTIU OBISESAN “M” to make payment into an account of one MAGRET EBOH AGBO “F” MONIEPOINT Account number 5055740627 and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 174 of the Criminal Law of Lagos state 2015.”
However, he pleaded not guilty.
The prosecutor, Supol Phillip Ademigbuji, then asked the Court to give a date for hearing since he pleaded not guilty to enable the Police to prove that he actually committed the alleged offence.
The Presiding Magistrate, Mrs. O. Kusanu, granted him bail in the sum of N1m with two sureties in like sum, who must show evidence of means of livelihood and tax payment while addresses will be verified by the Court.
The matter was adjourned for mention while the defendant was remanded in custody at the correctional center at Kirikiri town, Lagos, pending when he will perfect his bail conditions.
