A 21-year-old security guard, Emmanuel Obongha, has been arraigned before an Ikeja Magistrate Court in Lagos State over alleged sexual assault involving two minors.
The defendant was brought before Magistrate Mrs. M.O. Tanimola on a three-count charge bordering on alleged sexual assault and indecent treatment of children.
According to the charge sheet filed by the Commissioner of Police, with Charge No. 2026 and LCIS No. 09260986316, the alleged offences occurred at 132, Awolowo Way, Ikeja, within the Ikeja Magisterial District.
The prosecutor, ASP Lucky Ihehie, informed the court that the defendant was employed as a security guard by the father of the victims and was entrusted with duties around the residence at the said address.
The prosecution alleged that on September 10, 2026, the defendant allegedly assaulted one of the minors at the premises.
It was further alleged that between April 2026 and September 2026, the defendant, who was in a position of trust as a security guard and caregiver in the home, allegedly assaulted the second minor who is said to have special needs.
The charge also alleged indecent treatment of the two minors at the same location within the magisterial district.
According to the prosecution, the alleged offences were contrary to and punishable under Sections 135 and 261 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2015.
ASP Lucky Ihehie told the court that the matter was reported by the family after they discovered the alleged incident, and the defendant was subsequently arrested and investigated by the Police.
He said the nature of the case requires that the case file be forwarded to the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for legal advice to determine whether the matter should be transferred to the High Court for trial.
The prosecutor therefore, applied for the defendant to be remanded in custody pending the outcome of the DPP’s advice.
After listening to the submissions, Magistrate Mrs. M.O. Tanimola ordered that the defendant be remanded in custody at the Correctional Center at Kirikiri Town, Lagos, pending advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
The Magistrate directed that the case file be duplicated and forwarded to the DPP for legal advice and adjourned the matter pending the receipt of the advice.
The court also advised that the affected minors be given necessary medical and psychosocial support.
The incident has sparked concern among residents in the area, with many calling on parents and employers to thoroughly screen domestic staff and security personnel employed in homes where children reside.
Child rights advocates have also urged that persons employed to work in homes be properly monitored and that children be encouraged to speak up about any form of abuse.
It is important to note that the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty by a court of competent jurisdiction.
