Domestic Violence, Sexual Abuse Thrive In Silence – Says WAPA Commissioner 

In a statement issued on Monday, the Commissioner said domestic violence and sexual abuse are not private matters to be hidden behind closed doors; they are violations of human rights, crimes against humanity, and direct assaults on the dignity of women, children, and vulnerable persons.

“Domestic violence and sexual abuse thrive in silence. When victims are too afraid or ashamed to speak, perpetrators continue to harm others without consequence. That is why we must collectively say NO MORE SILENCE, NO MORE VIOLENCE” Speaking further, she stressed that, “As a government, we are deeply committed to protecting the vulnerable, supporting survivors, and holding offenders accountable.

The Lagos State Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation continues to strengthen its Domestic and Sexual Violence Units, ensuring that survivors receive counselling, legal support, shelter, and economic empowerment to rebuild their lives.” However, Hon. Dada noted that the government alone cannot win this fight. Hence, it needs communities, families, religious institutions, schools, and every individual to stand united. “When you witness abuse, speak up. When you suspect violence, intervene. When a survivor seeks help, believe them and support them. “To all survivors listening today, I want you to know: you are not alone, you are not to blame, and your voice matters. Help is available, and we are here to walk with you on the path to healing and justice.

“Together, let us break the cycle of silence and shame. Let us build a Lagos State where every woman, every child, every person can live free from fear and violence”, she advised. The Commissioner reiterated that “Domestic violence and sexual abuse must never have a place in our society”.
