Posted on November 7, 2025

The Rivers State Flood Management Committee, led by the Deputy Governor, Her Excellency Prof. Mrs. Ngozi Nma Odu, has distributed relief materials to flood victims in Ahoada East, Ahoada West, and Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Areas as part of ongoing efforts by the state government to cushion the effects of recent flooding across affected communities.

Speaking during the ceremony in Port Harcourt, Prof. Odu reiterated the commitment of the Rivers State Government under Governor Sir Siminalayi Fubara to safeguard lives and ensure the welfare of citizens affected by flood disasters.

“We are keeping to our promises. We told you we would desilt the rivers — that work is ongoing and water is flowing fast as expected. We also promised to distribute both food and non-food items, and today we have fulfilled that promise,” she said.

Each of the three local government areas received two truckloads of relief items, comprising both food and non-food materials. The non-food items include 200 mattresses, 200 pillows, kitchen utensils, toiletries, bedsheets, blankets, and towels, among others, while the food items include 200 bags of 25kg rice, 300 cartons of noodles, 500 bags of beans, and cans of vegetable oil among other items.

Prof. Odu disclosed that the state government had also compensated the family that lost their kids during the flood with ₦3 million, reaffirming that the administration’s response goes beyond promises to tangible action.

The Deputy Governor encouraged local government councils to complement the state’s efforts by providing additional support to victims.

“If we have bought ten bags of garri, for example, the local government should buy five more so that more families can benefit,” she stated.

She particularly commended the Chairman of Ahoada East Local Government Area, Hon. Solomon Abua Ochoma, for his active participation and commitment throughout the exercise.

“I’m very delighted with the chairman. His presence and dedication show the love he has for his people,” Prof. Odu added.

The she announced that the distribution process will be closely monitored across the benefiting LGAs to ensure transparency and equitable sharing of relief materials.

Prof. Odu also revealed that the next phase of distribution will cover Abua/Odual, Obio/Akpor, and Port Harcourt City Local Government Areas by Tuesday next week, as part of the phased relief intervention plan.

The Rivers State Flood Management Committee continues to lead recovery efforts, including ongoing desilting operations at the Rumukrushi River, which have already yielded visible progress in improving water flow and mitigating future flood risks.
