Those who had bought graves for their burial at Atan cemetery in Yaba, Lagos will have to pay certain amount of money for the maintenance of the vaults.

P.M.EXPRESS reports that it was the decision of the Yaba Local Council Development Area, who decried the cost of maintaining the place.

It was confirmed that the Executive Committee of Yaba LCDA has approved the payment of N10,000 yearly maintenance fee to complement the efforts of the Local Government towards keeping the cemetery clean and secured.

According to the Executive Chairman Of the Local Government, Hon Kayode Adejare Omiyale, “the cost of providing necessary infrastructure within the cemetery is enormous”. She said that the maintainers required the partnership of vaults owners in order to  provide good roads, drainage system, security for the cemetery and for those who visit their late loved ones buried there.

She explained that currently the revenue being collected by the Council does not cover the operational cost of the cemetery.

“The cost structure is based on burial  but does not take into account the cost associated with the long term upkeep and maintenance of the cemetery”

She said that the council wants the place to be an enviable resting place as could be compared to the best in the world and had made wide consultations before they came up with this idea. Our slogan in this regard is that” we can care for our loved ones even in the grave” she stated.

P.M.EXPRESS reports that the council has sent information to that effect to those who had or bought the vaults for themselves and their relations.
