Otti: Building A New Abia And Repositioning The Labour Party
EBERE UZOUKWA, PhD

The emergence of Governor Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, as the Executive Governor of Abia State has not only altered the developmental trajectory of the State but has also significantly transformed the political fortunes of the Labour Party (LP) in Abia and across Nigeria. Through visionary leadership, prudent resource management, and an unwavering commitment to delivering democratic dividends, Governor Otti has built what is now popularly known as the “New Abia” a governance model that is rapidly becoming a benchmark for effective, accountable, and people-oriented leadership in Nigeria.
The remarkable transformation taking place in Abia State under Governor Otti’s administration has strengthened public confidence in government and, by extension, enhanced the credibility, acceptability, and electoral appeal of the Labour Party. Unlike in the past, when political parties often thrived on lofty promises and political rhetoric, the Labour Party in Abia has become synonymous with tangible results, infrastructural renewal, institutional reforms, transparency, accountability, and people-centred governance.
This growing confidence in the administration was further demonstrated on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, when a prominent political figure, former governorship candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), and respected statesman, Ochiagha Reagan Ufomba, formally joined the Labour Party and publicly declared his support for the re-election of Governor Alex Otti in 2027.
Even more significant was his decision to collapse his political structure, the Change Abia Organisation, into the Labour Party. The organisation, which comprises 197 affiliate groups spread across the State, represents a formidable grassroots movement with considerable political influence. According to Ochiagha Ufomba, his decision was inspired by the visible achievements of Governor Otti’s administration and the need to align with a political movement that genuinely prioritises the welfare, aspirations, and progress of the people.
The defection of such an accomplished political leader is not an isolated development. Rather, it reflects a broader political reality of the growing acceptance of Governor Otti’s governance model and the increasing appeal of the Labour Party among Abians and Nigerians. Across the State, more citizens are identifying with the party because they can see and feel the positive impact of government policies in their daily lives.
Governor Otti’s administration has consistently demonstrated that effective governance is built on service, integrity, competence, and measurable results. From massive investments in road infrastructure and healthcare reforms to educational advancement, urban renewal programmes, prompt payment of salaries and pensions, and the restoration of public confidence in government institutions, the administration has steadily laid the foundation for sustainable development and inclusive economic growth.
The Governor’s assurance during the reception ceremony that the long-awaited Abia Airport project at Nsulu is steadily progressing further reinforces his administration’s commitment to ambitious but achievable development goals. His explanation that the first year of his administration was dedicated to clearing inherited liabilities, addressing systemic challenges, and rebuilding critical sectors before embarking on major projects underscores a leadership style rooted in strategic planning, fiscal discipline, responsibility, and long-term vision.
Beyond governance, Governor Otti has played a pivotal role in restoring the Labour Party as a credible and viable political platform. Before the recent reforms within the party, many Nigerians were concerned that the Labour Party, under its former national leadership, had become susceptible to political opportunism and transactional politics. Internal disputes and leadership controversies threatened the party’s cohesion, credibility, and capacity to serve as a genuine platform for progressive political engagement.
Recognising the dangers such challenges posed to the future of the party, Governor Otti, alongside other committed leaders and stakeholders, took bold steps to rescue, stabilise, and reposition the Labour Party. Their efforts helped restore internal democracy, strengthen party structures, and return the party to its founding principles of justice, equity, accountability, inclusiveness, and service to the people.
Today, the Labour Party is experiencing renewed growth, stability, and acceptance across the country. The party’s improved image and organisational coherence have attracted accomplished professionals, respected political leaders, technocrats, young people, and grassroots mobilisers eager to contribute to nation-building through a credible and progressive political platform.
As the recognised national leader of the Labour Party and one of the most competent state governors in Nigeria, Governor Otti’s performance has become one of the party’s greatest political assets. His administration provides practical evidence that the Labour Party possesses not only the vision but also the competence and capacity to govern effectively.
The Governor’s declaration that there are no “old” or “new” members in the Labour Party and that every member enjoys equal rights, privileges, and opportunities reflects the inclusive culture being nurtured within the party. Such a philosophy promotes unity, encourages participation, attracts new members, and strengthens internal cohesion—qualities that are indispensable for long-term political success.
The goodwill messages delivered during the reception by political leaders and stakeholders from Isiala Ngwa North further underscored the growing confidence in Governor Otti’s administration. They described the government as accessible, responsive, people-oriented, and genuinely committed to the welfare of ordinary citizens. According to them, the steady influx of individuals into the Labour Party through grassroots mobilisation is a direct reflection of the people’s confidence in the Governor’s leadership and the transformative impact of his administration.
Indeed, the influx of prominent political actors into the Labour Party, exemplified by the entry of Ochiagha Reagan Ufomba and his supporters, suggests that the party is steadily consolidating its position ahead of the 2027 general elections. More importantly, it demonstrates that performance remains the most potent political advertisement and the most effective campaign strategy.
As Abia continues to witness unprecedented transformation under Governor Alex Otti, the Labour Party is simultaneously benefiting from the goodwill generated by effective governance. The correlation between performance and political acceptance has become increasingly evident. Across the State, citizens who once viewed politics with scepticism are beginning to see governance as a vehicle for development, prosperity, and positive change.
Ultimately, the New Abia project is not merely about roads, infrastructure, healthcare, education, and public sector reforms. It is about restoring faith in leadership, rebuilding public trust, promoting accountability, and demonstrating that government can truly work for the people. In accomplishing this, Governor Alex Otti is not only building a New Abia but also repositioning the Labour Party as a credible, disciplined, and formidable political force.
With growing public support, increasing political realignments, renewed internal stability, and a governance record that continues to attract admiration beyond Abia’s borders, the Labour Party appears better positioned than ever to field credible candidates and compete effectively in the 2027 general elections. The defection of Ochiagha Reagan Ufomba and the collapse of the Change Abia Organisation into the Labour Party may therefore be viewed not merely as a political event but as yet another endorsement of Governor Otti’s leadership, the New Abia vision, and the rising appeal of the Labour Party as a platform for progressive governance and sustainable development in Nigeria.
