The recent commissioning of the Ogbo Central Smart School, Ubakala, by the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, has provided a clear picture of Governor Alex Otti’s deliberate and strategic efforts to reposition education in Abia State. The event marked another milestone in the administration’s commitment to building a future where every Abia child has access to quality education, digital skills and the tools required to compete in a rapidly changing world.

Speaking during the commissioning, the Minister praised Governor Otti’s visionary approach to human capital development, stressing that true development is not measured only by roads, bridges and physical infrastructure, but also by investments that empower people with knowledge and skills. His remarks captured the philosophy behind the Smart School Initiative, which places education as the foundation for sustainable economic growth and social transformation.

The Ogbo Central Smart School, with its digitally equipped classrooms, Early Childhood Care Development Centre, modern library, 30-seat ICT centre, sick bay and other facilities, represents a new model of public education in Abia. It is the first of three smart schools being commissioned across the three senatorial districts of the State this month and part of the broader plan to establish 20 smart schools across the 17 Local Government Areas.

Governor Otti’s vision is to move education beyond the traditional approach of certificate acquisition to a system that develops creativity, innovation, problem-solving ability and technological competence among pupils. Each of the 20 smart schools is designed to provide a technology-driven learning environment, with interactive boards and tablets for pupils to support effective learning. This approach is aimed at preparing Abia children for a world increasingly shaped by digital technology, artificial intelligence and global competition.

However, the administration’s education reforms go beyond building impressive structures. Recognising that quality infrastructure must be matched with quality teaching, the government has prioritised the recruitment of qualified teachers while also investing in the retraining and capacity building of existing teachers. This ensures that educators are equipped with modern teaching methods and the necessary skills to deliver effective learning outcomes.

The retrofitting of existing schools, provision of essential learning materials and improvement of the general learning environment are also key components of the administration’s strategy to make education more accessible, enjoyable and impactful for pupils. The declaration that education in the smart schools will be free and compulsory further demonstrates the government’s commitment to removing barriers that may prevent children from accessing quality education.

The commissioning of the Ogbo Central Smart School therefore represents more than the opening of another school. It is a statement of intent that Abia is investing in its most valuable asset, its people. Through the Smart School Initiative, Governor Otti is building the foundation for a generation of digitally skilled, innovative and globally competitive young Abians who will contribute meaningfully to the future development of the State and beyond.
