Pupils and teachers abducted from Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State have finally regained their freedom after spending more than 50 days in captivity.

The Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, announced their release on Friday via a post on X.

Confirming the development, Onanuga wrote: “After more than 50 days in captivity, the pupils and teachers kidnapped in Oriire, Oyo State, have regained their freedom.”

However, he did not provide further details on the circumstances surrounding their release, including whether ransom was paid or if security operations led to their freedom.

The news has brought relief to parents, school authorities, and residents of Oriire, who have been in distress since the abduction.

Local leaders in the area commended security agencies and the federal government for their efforts, while also calling for stronger measures to prevent a recurrence in schools across Oyo State and the South-West region.

The abduction of the Oriire pupils and teachers added to growing concerns over insecurity in rural communities and schools in the state.

Stakeholders have continued to urge government at all levels to prioritize intelligence gathering, community policing, and the protection of schools to safeguard children and educators.

As of the time of this report, the rescued victims were said to be undergoing medical checks and psychosocial support before being reunited with their families.

Further updates are expected from the Oyo State Government and security agencies.
