Endorsement Of Tinubu For 2nd Term: Some Igbo Leaders Ask Ndieze About Obi’s Fate

A political debate has come up among the Igbo leaders in Lagos after a document surfaced endorsing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term. The move has drawn sharp questions from Ndigbo in the state.

The statement, said to be issued by the “Council of Ndieze/Ndi Isi-Igbo in conjunction with Igbo Speaking Community in Lagos State”, announced support for Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR. It also said a 57-man Ezes Committee has been set up for door-to-door campaign ahead of the 2027 election.

But the endorsement did not sit well with some Igbo residents. The question on the lips of several leaders and traders is: “What of Peter Obi?”

Some community members say Peter Obi remains a symbol of hope and representation for Ndigbo both in Lagos and across Nigeria. They argue that any political decision taken in the name of Ndigbo must reflect the general will of the people.

Critics noted that the council did not hold a broad consultation with major Igbo groups, market unions, youth bodies, and professionals before making the declaration. “You cannot speak for 3 million Igbos in Lagos without carrying everyone along,” a community leader said.

Leaders in Alaba International, Ladipo, and other major Igbo markets have distanced themselves from the endorsement. They said their focus is on policies that protect Igbo businesses and investments in Lagos.

Supporters of Peter Obi within the community say his message of competence, accountability, and production aligns with Igbo values of hard work and enterprise. To them, 2027 should be about track record, not just party.

Cultural commentators also weighed in, saying the title of Ndieze carries respect and must not be used for partisan politics without consensus. They called for proper Igbo town hall meetings before any endorsement.

The document promoted “A Vote for Renewed Hope, Stability and Sustainability…” as the reason for backing Tinubu. But a good number of Ndigbo in Lagos say they need to first assess how government policies have affected their lives and businesses.

The condemnation is not about division, stakeholders insist. It is about ensuring Ndigbo speak with one voice that protects their interest in Lagos politics and economy.

As 2027 approaches, Igbo groups are calling for dialogue to harmonize positions. For now, the dominant question remains: “What of Peter Obi?”

Legal and political analysts say all endorsements are subject to democratic debate, and citizens have the right to support candidates of their choice.
