Why Dr. Chibueze Ofobuike Is Favoured To Win Aguata Federal Constituency Seat – Investigation

Investigation into the unfolding political contest for Aguata Federal Constituency House of Representatives seat has revealed that Dr. Chibueze Ofobuike is strongly favoured to win, with his only major obstacle being the growing number of aspirants from his own Umuchu community contesting for the same position.

Dr. Ofobuike, former Mayor of Aguata Local Government Area, is currently rated as the leading aspirant for the seat ahead of the general elections. His grassroots popularity, loyalty to the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, and administrative experience have placed him ahead of others.

During a tour of communities across Aguata, including Ekwulobia, Isuofia, Uga, Akpo, Achina, Igbo-Ukwu, Ikenga, Ezinifite and Umuchu, our correspondent observed that Dr. Ofobuike enjoys wide acceptance among youths, elders, women groups and the political class.

Sources within APGA at ward, local government and state levels confirmed that he has built a solid political structure over the years. Stakeholders recalled that his tenure as Mayor of Aguata was impactful, noting that he maintained cordial relationships with traditional rulers, Presidents-General of town unions, market leaders, youth bodies and religious leaders.

A top party chieftain in Aguata said: “Dr. Ofobuike is easy to sell. The people know him. He served as Mayor and he was accessible. He understands Aguata politics and governance. That is why the odds favour him at this time.”

Another major factor in his favour is the goodwill of the Anambra State Governor, Professor Charles Chukwuma Soludo. Governor Soludo, whose developmental strides have further strengthened APGA as the dominant party in Anambra State, is said to be keen on credible and competent candidates who can complement his administration’s agenda and attract federal presence to the state.

Since Aguata is the home Local Government of Governor Soludo, political analysts believe any candidate enjoying the governor’s support and flying APGA’s flag is already in a pole position to win the federal constituency seat.

Similarly, the emerging political understanding between the All Progressives Congress, APC, at the national level and APGA in Anambra is seen as an added advantage. The alliance is expected to reduce political tension, consolidate Anambra’s strategic importance, and give APGA candidates leverage in the forthcoming polls. Dr. Ofobuike, due to his acceptability across party lines, is seen as a major beneficiary of such arrangement.

However, investigation revealed one internal challenge that could affect his block votes if not properly managed.

The challenge is the presence of multiple aspirants from Umuchu, his home town, who are also in the race for the same Aguata Federal House seat. Umuchu is one of the largest and most politically active communities in Aguata, with a significant voting population that is considered critical for victory.

Political observers have warned that if three or four candidates from Umuchu remain in the contest, it could lead to division of votes from Umuchu, which should naturally serve as a solid base for Dr. Ofobuike.

A community leader in Umuchu who spoke on condition of anonymity said: “Ofobuike is our son and we are proud of him. He served Aguata well as Mayor. Our only concern is that many of our sons are contesting the same seat. If we divide our votes among ourselves, it will affect our chances. He needs to call his brothers together and build consensus.”

Stakeholders have therefore, advised him to initiate an internal reconciliation process within Umuchu to ensure the community presents a united front at the party primary and the general election.

It is believed that if he succeeds in harmonizing interests in Umuchu and securing the community’s block votes, combined with his popularity in other towns, Governor Soludo’s support, APGA dominance, and the possible APC-APGA alliance, his victory would be almost certain.

For now, residents say they want an accessible and experienced representative who understands local governance, and many believe Dr. Ofobuike fits that description.
