‎
‎Rivers State Deputy Governor and Chairman of the Rivers State Flood Prevention and Management Committee, Prof. Ngozi Nma Odu, has visited flood-impacted residents of Eneka in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, assuring them of continued Government intervention to cushion the effects of the flooding.
‎
‎Prof. Odu, who spoke during an inspection of the affected areas on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, said Governor Siminalayi Fubara was deeply concerned about the situation and had directed the Flood Prevention and Management Committee to take immediate steps to address the plight of affected residents.
‎
‎She explained that the committee had identified possible causes of the flooding, including the obstruction and alteration of existing waterways and canals.
‎
‎According to her, the committee discovered that efforts were being made to reclaim part of a canal, in Rumuomasi, warning that such activities could worsen flooding in the area if allowed to continue.
‎
‎Prof. Odu also said residents of New Jerusalem Estate informed the committee that water had been wrongly re-channelled, causing water from surrounding areas to flow into the estate and flood several buildings.
‎
‎The Chairman of the Flood Prevention and Management Committee said the findings would be presented to Governor Fubara, after which the Ministry of Works would engage with the affected communities and estate management on measures to restore proper drainage channels.
‎
‎The Deputy Governor disclosed that the Government would provide immediate palliatives to affected families while further interventions were being worked out.
‎
‎She also directed that the names of affected families be compiled to facilitate additional assistance from the Government.
‎
‎Prof. Odu assured the residents that the Government would continue to assess the situation and implement measures aimed at reducing the impact of flooding on communities in the area.
‎
‎Responding, a resident of New Jerusalem Estate, Eneka, Engr. Obinna Okoro, commended Governor Fubara for his swift response to the flooding in the estate.
‎
‎According to him, it was the first time residents had witnessed flooding of such magnitude, attributing the incident to ongoing construction work in the area.
‎
‎He thanked Governor Fubara for his prompt intervention and expressed hope that the measures discussed would be implemented to address the situation.
‎
‎“We thank the Governor for his immediate action. His response was very fast, and we wish him well,” Okoro said.
‎
‎In a related development, Prof. Odu, who also chairs the Rivers State Flood Prevention and Management Committee, visited Rukpoku Community on Wednesday to distribute palliatives to residents on the directive of Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
‎
‎Speaking at the palace of His Royal Highness, Eze Collins Ogwu III, Prof. Odu said the Governor, who recently returned to the country, was deeply concerned by the devastation caused by the floods and had directed the committee to intensify its intervention.
‎
‎She assured affected residents that the Government would return on Friday with additional assistance, stressing that the intervention was not limited to the distribution of palliatives.
‎
‎“We share in your pain. The Governor wants you to know that the Government cares and has not left you alone,” she said.
‎
‎The Deputy Governor also announced plans by the Ministries of Environment and Works to investigate the causes of the flooding in Rukpoku and other affected areas and implement permanent solutions.
‎
‎She attributed part of the recurring flooding to blocked drains and construction on waterways, urging residents to cooperate with the Government by keeping drainage channels and waterways free of obstructions.
‎
‎Responding on behalf of the Paramount Ruler, Chief Frank Nwachukwu expressed gratitude to Governor Fubara for remembering the Rukpoku Community and extending a hand of fellowship to residents during the difficult period.
