Abdullahi’s NBBF Ambition: Renewed Hope, Proven Capacity And A New Dawn For Nigerian Basketball

As the October 15, 2026 elective congress of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) approaches, Ambassador Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi (DAM) is presenting a candidacy built on experience, grassroots investment, institutional leadership and a commitment to youth development. His ambition reflects not only a vision for Nigerian basketball but also the broader Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Four defining qualities distinguish his candidacy:
1. Visionary and Experienced Leadership: With over two decades of involvement in basketball, including participation in the NBBF Premier League, Division One, NUGA competitions, the U-18 National Team and Trafford Basketball Club in Manchester, Abdullahi understands the game from the court to the administrative table. As Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the Energy Commission of Nigeria, he brings executive leadership, strategic coordination and institutional management experience to the challenge of repositioning the NBBF.
2. Proven Grassroots Development and Infrastructure Investment: Through the DAM Foundation, he has translated his passion into tangible interventions, including the construction of a basketball court in Kano, grassroots competitions and the annual DAM Foundation Basketball Championship in Okene, Kogi State. His basketball academy, which serves over 500 children, alongside support for players’ welfare, scholarships, medical assistance and other youth-focused interventions, demonstrates a commitment to building the game from its foundation rather than merely promising reform.
3. Strategic Thinking and Institutional Transformation: Abdullahi’s vision goes beyond winning competitions. He is advocating professionally managed leagues, sustainable sponsorship, stronger player welfare, modern facilities, transparent governance and structured talent development. His proposed 100-day action plan, featuring a federation audit, stakeholders’ summit, unified competition calendar and digital registration and statistics platform, reflects an emphasis on practical reforms, accountability and measurable results.
4. Youth Mobilisation, Inclusion and National Cohesion: As Director of Youth, Renewed Hope Ambassadors, and Secretary of the Sports Mobilisation Committee of the APC Presidential Campaign Council for the 2027 presidential election, Abdullahi occupies strategic positions in youth engagement and sports mobilisation. His NBBF ambition aligns with his commitment to translating President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope vision into opportunities for young Nigerians through sports, skills development, enterprise and social inclusion.
For Abdullahi, basketball is more than a game; it is a platform for discovering talent, creating livelihoods, engaging young people productively and strengthening national unity. His proposed agenda places grassroots development, D’Tigers and D’Tigress, women’s basketball, coaches, referees, clubs and state associations within a more coordinated and sustainable national framework.
As delegates prepare to elect a new NBBF leadership, his proposition is anchored in a simple principle: leadership must be demonstrated through capacity, investment, inclusion and results.
With a record of grassroots interventions, experience in public-sector leadership and a vision for institutional reform, Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi is seeking to move Nigerian basketball from untapped potential to sustained excellence by building a federation that serves its stakeholders, empowers its youth and gives the next generation a stronger foundation for success.
