How Otti’s Education Revolution Is Turning Public School Students Into Global Winners
EBERE UZOUKWA, PhD

The emergence of five Abia public school students as global champions at the International School Debate Championship in Doha, Qatar, is a powerful testament to what purposeful investment in education can achieve. Celebrated by Governor Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, at the Michael Okpara Auditorium, Umuahia, on Saturday, October 24, 2026, their triumph goes beyond winning trophies as it demonstrates the enormous potential within Abia’s public school system and equally underscores the significance of the Governor’s determination to reverse years of neglect and restore public education to its rightful place. Their achievement sends a clear message that, with the right investment and opportunities, students from public schools can compete and excel on the global stage.

The five champions, Chikodi Maureen Nmesooma, Simon Divine Nduom, Akamnonu Franklin Chukwuemeka, Christian Chiweotutom Esther and Ifeanyichukwu Prisca Cherechukwu, returned with the prestigious Best International School Debate Team and Best Overall Team honours. Their accomplishment challenges the notion that academic excellence belongs exclusively to pupils in elite private schools. They also demonstrated that public school students possess the talent and intellectual capacity to compete internationally when their abilities are nurtured and given the right opportunities. Their victory is equally a source of immense pride for Abia and an inspiration to children across the state who aspire to achieve greatness regardless of their background.

This remarkable success on the other hand reflects the direction of Governor Otti’s education reforms, which include free and compulsory education, the recruitment of approximately 10,000 teachers, plans to establish 21 Smart Schools and sustained investment in school infrastructure. These interventions are aimed at expanding access to education, strengthening teaching capacity and creating better learning environments. The Governor, himself a beneficiary of public education, has vowed that Abia’s schools will never return to their previous state of neglect. This commitment mirrors the Governor’s determination to build a system in which every child, irrespective of family background, has a fair opportunity to learn, develop and fulfil their potential.

The Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education and the Abia State Universal Basic Education Board (ASUBEB) also deserve commendation for their roles in translating the Governor’s education agenda into tangible interventions. Their continued efforts to implement reforms and improve learning conditions are essential to achieving lasting results. The Doha victory should serve as a springboard for stronger academic programmes, improved teacher support and greater opportunities for gifted pupils to excel in debate, science, technology and other fields. Governor Otti’s pledge to sponsor the team’s participation in next year’s competition and his award of a scholarship to Christian Chiweotutom Esther through the Alex Otti Foundation further demonstrate a commitment to rewarding excellence and nurturing talent. His appeal to successful Abians to adopt schools also reinforces the need for collective responsibility in rebuilding public education.
Ultimately, the true measure of an education revolution lies in the opportunities it creates and the lives it transforms. The five champions have demonstrated that Abia’s public school students possess the talent to excel anywhere in the world. The Otti administration is therefore committed and prepared to sustain the huge investment in the education sector, strengthen implementation and ensure that the benefits of reform reach schools and pupils across the state. Abia’s public school students are not short of talent, rather what they need is a system that recognises, develops and rewards them. By consolidating its reforms and sustaining its commitment to quality education, the Otti administration is ready to build on this remarkable achievement and help establish a lasting culture of academic excellence and global competitiveness.
