Before Nigeria became a familiar presence at FIFA World Cup tournaments, one generation opened the door.

Its captain was

In ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ—๐Ÿ–๐Ÿ‘, he captained the Flying Eagles to the ๐… ๐€ ๐”-๐Ÿ๐ŸŽ ๐–๐จ๐ซ๐ฅ๐ ๐‚๐ฎ๐ฉ ๐ข๐ง ๐Œ๐ž๐ฑ๐ข๐œ๐จ, becoming the first captain to lead a Nigerian national football team to a FIFA World Cup tournament at any level.

The championship took place from ๐‰๐ฎ๐ง๐ž ๐Ÿโ€“๐Ÿ๐Ÿ—, ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ—๐Ÿ–๐Ÿ‘.

Ali Jeje belonged to a generation of Nigerian footballers whose development was closely connected to school football and community competitions.

Although his football achievements are well documented, the names of his primary and secondary schools have not yet been reliably established in the published records examined for this tribute.

His educational background deserves preservation alongside his sporting accomplishments.

After all, these were young men whose footballing ambitions developed while education remained an important part of their lives.

Ali Jeje played for ๐Œ๐ข๐ ๐ก๐ญ๐ฒ ๐‰๐ž๐ญ๐ฌ ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐‰๐จ๐ฌ, one of Nigeriaโ€™s respected traditional football clubs, and ๐€๐›๐ข๐จ๐ฅ๐š ๐๐š๐›๐ž๐ฌ ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐€๐›๐ž๐จ๐ค๐ฎ๐ญ๐š.

Mighty Jets represented an important part of the football culture of ๐‰๐จ๐ฌ, ๐๐ฅ๐š๐ญ๐ž๐š๐ฎ ๐’๐ญ๐š๐ญ๐ž, a city with a longstanding tradition of producing talented footballers.

His emergence through Nigerian club football eventually brought him into the national youth team under

In ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ—๐Ÿ–๐Ÿ‘, Ali Jeje captained Nigeria to the ๐€๐Ÿ๐ซ๐ข๐œ๐š๐ง ๐˜๐จ๐ฎ๐ญ๐ก ๐‚๐ก๐š๐ฆ๐ฉ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐ฌ๐ก๐ข๐ฉ, defeating Cรดte dโ€™Ivoire ๐Ÿ’โ€“๐Ÿ‘ ๐จ๐ง ๐š๐ ๐ ๐ซ๐ž๐ ๐š๐ญ๐ž in the final.

That continental triumph preceded our historic appearance in Mexico.

Ali Jeje carried the responsibility of leading young Nigerian footballers onto an international stage our country had never previously reached at FIFA World Cup level.

He was a defender, a teammate and our captain.

I had the privilege of serving as his

Together with our teammates and coaches, we experienced the discipline, sacrifices, challenges and pride of representing Nigeria at a defining moment.

One photograph captures that history beautifully: Ali Jeje introducing members of our team to

It remains a powerful reminder of the generation that first carried Nigeria onto the FIFA World Cup stage.

Football history is not complete when we remember only appearances and results.

Behind every footballer is a human story: friendships, family, personal interests, moments of happiness and difficult experiences.

For Ali Jeje, one particularly painful memory has remained with me.

At one point, I was informed that our captain had passed away.

I attempted to reach him, but the information I received suggested he was no longer alive.

For approximately three years, I lived with that understanding.

Then I discovered something extraordinary.

I subsequently became aware of an account that he had publicly spoken about people having written him off as dead while he was still living.

Imagine discovering that someone you had mourned was actually alive.

Tragically, only a few days after I spoke about learning that our captain was alive, I received the devastating news that he had passed away.

Ali Jeje died on ๐ƒ๐ž๐œ๐ž๐ฆ๐›๐ž๐ซ ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ, ๐Ÿ๐ŸŽ๐ŸŽ๐Ÿ•, aged ๐Ÿ’๐Ÿ‘, following an illness.

His death brought another painful chapter to a generation whose members had shared so much together.

Ali Jejeโ€™s later years were marked by personal difficulties and illness.

His story also reminds us of the challenges many Nigerian football pioneers faced after representing their country.

In ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ—๐Ÿ–๐Ÿ‘, President Shehu Shagari promised educational scholarships to members of our historic Flying Eagles generation.

Unfortunately, that promise remained unfulfilled during Ali Jejeโ€™s lifetime.

Yet his legacy continued through the bond we established as teammates.

In ๐Œ๐š๐ฒ ๐Ÿ๐ŸŽ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ’, members of our ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ—๐Ÿ–๐Ÿ‘ ๐…๐ฅ๐ฒ๐ข๐ง๐  ๐„๐š๐ ๐ฅ๐ž๐ฌ generation came together to award a full educational scholarship to his son, ๐€๐›๐๐ฎ๐ฅ ๐‘๐š๐ก๐ฆ๐š๐ง ๐‰๐ž๐ฃ๐ž.

It was our collective way of honouring our late captain and supporting the next generation of his family.

To our captain, ๐€๐ฅ๐ข ๐‰๐ž๐ฃ๐ž:

I remain grateful for the honour of serving alongside you during one of the most significant chapters in Nigerian football history.

You carried the captainโ€™s responsibility when our country was preparing to make its first appearance on the FIFA World Cup stage.

We shared that journey.

We shared that history.

And those memories will remain with me.
