Senior Special Assistant (SSA) on Sports to the Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Adeyinka Adeboye and the Director of Sports Development (DSD) in Lagos State Sports Commission, Mr. Moses Kolawole have charged all Team Lagos athletes to double up their performance as the ongoing 19th National Sports Festival is getting more interesting by the day.

The sports festival is getting more interesting with the so called big names (elite athletes) falling by the way in the competition. On Monday, a young athlete from Lagos State, Nimota  Aregbesola upset table tennis star, Olympian and Commonwealth Games player, Funke Oshonaike in an unexpected result which caught pundits of the game unaware. Aregbesola, runner up in the women’s singles at the recently held Asoju Oba Table Tennis Championship, was a product of :Lagos State grassroots sports development programme.

Adeboye told PM EXPRESS while watching the boxing bouts at the Aguiyi Ironsi Cantonment, Asokoro, Abuja that Team Lagos were well prepared for the sports festival and he expected them to do the state proud in a big way.

“The Lagos State Sports Commission has worked very hard to see that the athletes got ready for the festival. Our athletes are very young and they are our future. I want them to put in more effort to see that we have a good outing at the end of the day,” he said.

In a separate interview, the Director of Sports Development, Kolawole noted Lagos athletes are improving on their performance by the day.

“More medals have begun to come in for us. We got our young athletes ready for this championship. I want to advise them not to relent. I know that as they are winning medals for Lagos State, many of them will still get calls up to the national camps of their respective sports. Our sports development programme in Lagos is yielding good results for us,” he said.
