How Policemen Were Mobbed After Shooting Pregnant Woman

It was double tragedy on Saturday in Ijegun area of Lagos after a team of Police operatives attached to Anti-Cultism Unit of the Area M Command, Idimu, Lagos, shot a pregnant woman dead while reportedly chasing internet fraudsters popularly called Yahoo Boys. In retaliation, the residents mobbed the officer on the spot.

The leader of the team, Victor Ugbegun, was also apprehended by the angry mob and seriously battered before the Oba of Ijegun intervened and rescued him while the other officers managed to escape.

P.M.EXPRESS reports that the incident happened at 10am at last bus stop in Ijegun where the victim, identified as Busayo Owoodun, popularly known as Mama Koyun, was inside her fashion designs shop located along the road.

It was gathered that the team of police officers were in area trailing suspected ‘Yahoo boys’ and other criminal elements. In the process, they shot sporadically and the stray bullets hit the victim, Busayo Owoodun and she bled profusely. She was rushed to the nearby Better Life Private hospital where she eventually died.

Her death sparked a protest as the youths in area carried her corpse from the hospital to the Oba’s palace. The youths also held the bus, which the police team came with, and brought out the officer that fired the shot. They descended on him and moved to cause violent riot in the area before the Police mobilised other Divisions, who moved in to save the situation and brought it under control.
The corpse of the late Busayo and a yet to be identified man were later deposited at the mortuary for autopsy report.

P.M.EXPRESS gathered that the late pregnant Busayo got married to her husband few years ago and they had two children before she was killed. She died at the age of 32.

The Lagos Police Command has issued a statement through the PPRO, DSP Bala Elkana, over the ugly incident. He said that on 10th August, 2019, at about 1455hours, a team of Policemen from the Anti Kidnapping Unit attached to Area M Command Idimu tracked some kidnapping suspects to Ijegun-Isolo Road, Ijegun bus stop but came under attack by members of the deadly gang. A stray bullet hit a pregnant woman, Busayo Owoodun. He said that the gang with the support of some notorious cultists in the area, attacked the Police team and injured the team leader, ASP Victor Ugbegun and two others who are currently in critical condition at the intensive care unit. Reinforcements from Operations Department, Rapid Response Squads, Task Force, and neighboring Divisions were able to contain the situation and evacuate the injured officers to the hospital.


The Command has launched a manhunt for the assailants with a view of bringing them to justice. The corpse of the victim of the stray bullet was taken to hospital for autopsy. The Commissioner of Police has ordered an in-depth investigation into the case. While condoling with the family of the deceased person, the Command called for calm and assured her family and friends that justice will prevail.
