LASEMA Urges Precaution Against Fire Incidents, Adds Light Tow Truck To Recovery Fleet

The Director-General/Chief Executive Officer, Lagos State Emergency Management Authority (LASEMA), Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, has advised corporate bodies, industries and individuals to initiate and inculcate necessary daily precautionary measures to be practised their members of staff to avert fire incidents.

Osanyintolu spoke after officers of the agency put out the fire in a one-storey building at 38A, Glover Road, Ikoyi over the weekend, promising a thorough investigation into the immediate or remote causes of the outbreak.

He explained that the timely response of the Agency and other first responders to a distress call ensured that the fire was stopped before gutting the entire office building which housed BEIN and Co at the top floor and ABSA CAPITAL on the ground floor.

According to him, “The fire started at the top floor of the storey building while the ground floor was totally salvaged by the emergency responders in record time, though the cause of the fire could not be ascertained as at the time of the operation”.

While assuring Lagosians that the present administration is determined to safeguard the lives and property, Dr. Oke-Osanyitolu advised all residents to install fire extinguishers in their various premises and ensure all electrical appliances are switched off when not in use and at the end of the workday.

He stated further that the successful operation which lasted for about two hours with minimal damages did not record any loss of lives nor injuries, just as the emergency responders prevented the fire from spreading to adjoining buildings.

Osanyintolu also revealed that to further enhance the ability to deal with emergencies, additional equipment had been added to the Recovery Fleet of the Agency, saying that “As a proactive agency on top of its job, the new Light Tow Truck was procured in cognisance of the sensitive nature of LASEMA’s extensive responsibilities and the urgency required for the agency’s operations”.

“The Light Tow Truck addition is to ensure that wherever LASEMA needed space to access incident sites on the roads to emergency/disaster sites or for its operations, it will not be hampered by parked or obstructing vehicles because in emergency situations every second counts” he added.
