Mrs Shukurat Alagabi Abdulateef, Director of Studies of Al- Faruq Schools has called on Lagos State Sports Commission to assist private schools in area of sports.

Abdullateef said this at the school’s Inter House Sports Competition held recently at Capppa Sports Complex, Oshodi, Lagos.

Abdullateef said Inter House Sports Competition is a part of curricular activities of the schools, but most of the private schools don’t have the financial muscle to organize it for their students.

“This is the first time we are organizing our Inter House Sports. School owners cannot jump into Inter House Sports like that because it is capital intensive, but the only way school owners can do that is if Lagos State Government can give us sports subvention I think, more private schools will organize inter house sports annually,” she said.

Asked what of the school fees collected from parents and guardians, Abdullateef quickly revealed that majority of parents and guardians feel reluctantly to pay for it which affects many private schools from organizing inter house school sports.

“The impression of the public is that school owners are collecting sports fees from parents and guardians, it is not so, only few of them show interest which cannot be enough to organize a befitting Inter House Sports Competition. That is why if government can give us subvention, it would be easy for school owners to do it on annual basis,” she said.

She also urged the government to upgrade some playgrounds around Lagos to standard mini stadia so that schools around the sports arena will be able to have access to sports facilities during their sports day.

At end of the keenly contested Inter House Sports Competition, Yellow House emerged champion as it won 17 gold, 15 silver and 12 bronze medals.

Blue house occupied second position with 17 gold, 9, silver and 18 bronze medals, while Green House took third position with 14 gold, 19 silver and 12 bronze medals as Red House occupied fourth position with 9 gold, 15 silver and 12 bronze medals.
