The wish of a young lady is to marry a young man of probably her age, but to 20-year-old Aisha (surname withheld), her wish in life is to marry an elderly man who is already having a first wife so that she will be the second wife to him.

This may be strange, but she had her reasons. Aisha, who resides with her parents at Jubril Martin street in Ejigbo, Lagos offered explanation why she chose to be a second wife.

She said she had observed both in her polygamous family and outside that those women who were married as second wife get fair treatment from their husbands.

According to Aisha: “Second wives are treated with respect and dignity and their husbands ensure they are happy.”

She explained that before a man considers to marry second wife, it must have been a thought out desire for a long time which has always been difficult to achieve by men due to loneliness and neglect by first wife.

She said that when the man finally gets a woman to marry him as second wife, such a man would try as much as possible to preserve and sustain the relation because he may not derive much from the first wife who may have focused her attention on her children.

Aisha said such husband will naturally focus his attention on the second wife as the first wife will be looking beyond her husband to her children and the issue of satisfying him will be secondary.

She said it was those vacuum that smart young women cash in and choose to become second wives and control every thing including the properties because the man will give her all love and attention.

Aisha, a Muslim who just finished her secondary school education said from her interactions with men especially the youth, most of them appeared to be lazy, dishonesty and not trust worthy to be a husband.

She said most men do not want to work only basically rely in committing crimes and have no maturity to  stand as husband.

“Most of them are into drugs, robbery, cheating and various forms of fraud and have no moral value in their life. Some attend universities and other higher institutions yet they cannot express themselves except browsing their phones and computers,” she explained.

Aisha said she was not prepared to marry such person and had made up her mind to wait until she sees the kind of husband she want which will meet her condition.

On the risk involved because of threats from the first wife and her children, she said marriage is a risk and so been married as a second wife is part of the risk in marriage.

She, however, said her choice of second wife does not mean she should marry any man who comes her way. She is looking out for a man who have what it takes to take care of her. A man who will be wealth enough to will parts of his properties to her if eventually death occurred.
