FCMB Paternity Scandal And The Hypocrisy Of Nigerians

During the #EndSARS Protest, Nigerians, youth especially, called for complete overhaul and cleansing of the public system. The inefficiency in our public institutions seems to have weakened the social system and consequently has produced a character-deficient society.

The #EndSARS Protest was not just a call to an end to Police brutality and the nefarious activities of the men of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) but also a call for good governance. Virtually every living soul in Nigeria supported the protest until it was hijacked by some unscrupulous elements and the rest is now history.

Every society is made up of the content of character of each individual that makes up such a society. Whether or not the society will be sane is a function of those that people it. Whether or not rules would be adhered to has to do with the peopling of the society.

A society that glorifies materialism over humanism would find herself struggling for progress. Excessive penchant for materialism would definitely weaken the moral and value system. This would, in turn, give birth to unholy practices both in private and public institutions and that is exactly where we have found ourselves.

Nigerians glorify materialism over our common humanity. Our definition of value is not in our content of character but in that car we wish to possess to impress others ; that mansion we must build to show that ‘ we belong ‘ ; that ‘ Aso-Ebi ‘ we must buy to demonstrate class, that flashy lifestyle we must exhibit for people to respect us and so on.

Consequently, we create loopholes in our public institutions to siphon our common wealth. In our private institutions as well, we have countless of unwholesome practices ongoing on daily basis. Boss must sleep with subordinate for her to get promoted. Materials mix is not adequate because the operators have connived with store manager to have some money going to their private pockets not minding the effects of the finished products (with inadequate material mixing) on the company’s image and the consumers themselves.

Nigerians are terrible humans. Let us check ourselves in the confine of our closet. We all find it easy to criticize the paternity scandal of the FCMB MD but we are all guilty of one crime or another. We are all the real SARS that has to be ended.

Nigerians will be a better society if we all make up our mind to be good. It begins with you and me. Let us assume the society of the unborn souls. We are the problem of our society and we can also decide to end it if we have a mind renewal.

I am Posu Joseph Sewanu.
